Has anyone heard when the next PigOrama is at the Tejon Ranch? I've been trying to get a hold of the gentalman who runs the management program there but he hasn't returned my calls and it seems he's never in the office.

Thanks, Mel

I am not sure exactly when the date is but I know what you mean about not being able to get ahold of Don. The person to call is his assistant who does all the paperwork. Her name is Sandy and her phone number is (661) 663-4209. She is really helpful and almost always answers the phone. She is there m-f 8am to 5pm except an hour for lunch which varies in the 12-2 time period. Just call her and she can help you out.

Has anyone hunted Tejon ranch? What did you think of it? I know they are kind of expensive. I was there once for a pig hunt and I saw a lot of game. There were lots of pigs. Lots of deer too. Would like to hear your thoughts on it.         Thanx  Fubar

I live in Santa Clarita, just "down the hill" from Tejon Ranch.  It's a great place to hunt.  It can get a little pricey depending on how much you use it.  Use it a lot though and it becomes quite reasonable.  The current rate card shows:

Upland game $800/yr
Upland game w/ one pig add $350
Turkey (two birds unguided) $800
Early deer $1600

I like the upland package which also includes all the coyotes, foxes, bobcats and ground squirels you want.

There are many more hunts and combos.  Don G. who runs the hunting program is a really good guy.

I'd recommend it if you're close enough to use it regularly.

I haven't hunted deer/pronghorn/elk/bear there but I've hunted the birds and predators.

The predator population is great (as it is both on and off the ranch).  The deer population is high but you're not going to find any 30" mulies up there (or 25" for that matter).  Still, it's a beautiful place to hunt and not be worried about who's over the next ridge shooting your way.

The bird hunting is great also.  Once again though, off the ranch in the same general area is just as good.

The best part about Tejon is that you can go out and not see the trash that has been dumped in the Nat'l Forest by the less than desirable types.  You also don't have to worry about someone else shooting in your general direction.  It's a lot like paying to dove hunt.  You can find (most of) the same critters on public land but it can be nice to hunt the private side if you want a safer, prettier place to take you family, etc.

I hunted the ranch in June of this year.  I hunted for 3 days during the week and was not bothered by anyone.  It was expensive but nice.  Saw lots of small bucks and pigs in certain areas (Bear Trap Rd.) I took a nice sow (180+).

I bowhunted the 3-day hog hunt in February at Tejon.  Saw lots of pigs. Harvested a 190 lb. sow (my 1st).  Saw several does.  Loved the experience.  My only wish is I'd like the option to tent outside the cabin instead of sleeping in the cabin.  I don't even want to be charged less, I just want the option because I can't sleep well in a room full of snoring guys.   Other than that, great country, lots of game.  Will go again this year.

I've heard of pig-oramas that are discounted pig hunts the Tejon Ranch puts on from time to time.  Also, I've tried calling Don G. 3 times to get information.  Seems too busy to return calls....is there a way to get on a mailing list?  Or do you just have to get lucky and catch him when he's in the office?

Thanks,  Bill

IF you buy the package, how does it work?  DO you have to make reservations?  Are there quotas of number of hunters?  Have you ever been told they were booked?

Yes, there are a finite number of spots available.  Some are reserved for several years in advance (elk hunts, etc.).  The small game is normally open.

I think that the huntable portion of the ranch is something like 270,000 acres so running into another hunter isn't a real problem.  The do divide it up into 4-5 sections and you have rights on that section.  Even if these are only 40,000 acres, there's still plenty of room to stretch out.

I talked to someone who has hunted there for over 15 years and he says he still hasn't seen half of the ranch because it's so big.

Some of those spots are reserved by archery pro shops but are not necessarily taken yet.  Try asking the pro shops in your area if they have scheduled hunts to the Tejon Ranch.

The Ranch is huge!  I never saw another hunter while I was there.  Lots of cattle and deer and pigs. The hunts are very expensive but there seems to be a lot of game.   I don't believe the have the unguided pig option anymore.

I talked to the Tejon people in May at Raahauges Shooting Fair.  They told me that they are going to increase the number of Pig-oramas, and that the next one was in November.  This is a unguided weekend hunt for $300.00.  There is a cash prize ($500-1000) for the largest pig taken. No lodging provided but I think you can camp on the ranch for this hunt.

wmidbrook,

Don is hard to get at Tejon. Try Sandy at this number, (661) 663-4209, she's usually around.

Here's a thought, what if we put together enough of the guys on this board and see if they would do a Pig-orama hunt just for us?  Maybe one this winter, or in early spring?

Would anyone be interested?

They've done that for WON on occasion.  The Pig-o-Rama started with 25 hunters and is now up to 50 per event.  I'd be up for it as I'm planning on doing the November hunt with a couple of friends.  Last I heard from them they were recommending waiting until it cooled down a tad and we had a rain or two.

I'd be up for it, but probably not until winter.  Between deer and ducks, my wife expects to see me at least once or twice between Sept and January.
