It depends on what you want to hunt.  There's actually a lot of good public land in SoCal.  If you really want to get depressed go to TX.  Lots of great animals but it's 98% private and it's as expensive as Tejon or more in several places.

Pigs on public land are pretty tough.  There are places but it's lots of hard work with steep hills and thick brush.  If you want deer, quail, coyotes, bobcat, fox, etc. you shouldn't have too much trouble finding some solid spots.

I've been getting a lot of emails asking about these "spots".  While I'm happy to help anyone who's getting discouraged by not finding anywhere to hunt in SoCal, it's not that I got the magic book from anyone.  I just hop in the truck on a regular basis with a DeLorme map book and start driving.  Sometimes it's just an hour.  Sometimes, during the summer when nothing else is in season and I cut the grass on Friday and the kids don't have soccer games (it's getting harder), I'll go out for the better part of the day just driving.  If you put the miles on, you'll find plenty of good places to hunt.

Remember that unless it's posted specifically otherwise, Nat'l Forest and BLM land is almost always open to hunting and there are hundreds of thousands of acres of it in SoCal.

Songdog is right. Socal has decent hunting but legwork is the only way to find it. Very few people are willing to give up their spots because they put in alot of work to find them. I have found most of my spots by wearing out boots and tires. Don't get discouraged. There are plenty of critters out there for everyone. P.S. What are you looking for?    Scott
