Good story but why drag? Just cut the pig up on the spot takes 20-30 minutes(Gutless is the only way to go), load him in your pack and your hiking not dragging back to the car, it also makes it easier when you get home for butchering. Once you get to know the roads better their usually is a road at the bottom of those hills that you can roll the pig down to and drive to pick him up.....well most of the time:lol bashing sign:

Good job on the hog hope he wasn't a stinker sometimes they are and sometimes they taste great.

Congrats on that one, Georg! That's a nice boar, and taken so close to that first one... well, that's just cool! :toast-yellow:

Kinda funny that my hog from the last hunt was taken within 200 yards of my very first Tejon hog as well... but then, I hunt that general area so much that almost all of my Tejon hogs have been taken within a half mile or so of each other.

Good luck on the next one!

I only have individual membership - no guest passes with that.

Last time I had an individual pass they allowed guests. Maybe 3 years ago it was. I guess they changed that too huh?

Nice job on the hog! I got mine with a bow last summer down in one of those nasty Tejon canyons (one without a road). It was 175+ lbs and I'm 125 so the attempt to drag lasted all of 6 inches.:lol bashing sign: Cut him up and made 2 trips out. It is definately the way to go. Congrats again!

Reason to drag is that I want all the bones. I make chops, spare ribs and even the leg bones end up in broth or stew. I want to take my time to butcher it with a saw etc. Only way I like to butcher them in the field is when I have a hoist - which I did not bring! I am not good at cutting it up on the ground by myself.

Here a close up of the face. Pretty eh? And while it doesn't look like it - it wasn't a stinker at all. Meat, including the fat in the sausage is all very good. Super tender? No - but tasty.

kcravnit,

Did you do any hikes off the roads? There is a lot of land you can't see from the road. I think especially after the heat was on for a couple of weekends in a row, those pigs stay away from the roads. You don't have to go very far - stay high on the ridges but walk off them far enough where you can check every canyon and draw.

I will take a break from Tejon - after three weekends in a row - it is time to go spear fishing next weekend. I will check in again here before I go up next time. Have fun up there!

Especially in today's fast paced times there is something comforting about returning to a certain spot after a long time and finding it unchanged. A good area always attracts life and back fills with new animals by the time you return.

It looks like the freezer is pretty full - I will take it easy for a while. I may get that longbow out to slow me down. (This time with a side arm for back up). Maybe I can kill something during the next POR, so you guys can help me drag it? You all tag out on Friday anyway and will be bored by Saturday night.

Cheers,

Awesome hog there Georg... Congrats!

FWIW I shot my second Tejon hog only about 300 yards from the first one. Gotta love those honey holes :)

I'm hoping to get up there in the next few days for a 1.5 day bowhunt, north side this time. Still have yet to score on the north but have had oh so many close opportunities. Maybe this will be the one!

hi kcravnit
I think i saw you on Sunday with your polaris.Im with the green Jeep Wrangler.I one thing i found out about the pigs at Tejon once they hear your truck coming they gone.. 2-300yds away. Some may not care but most will.
I ven't shot one yet too picky maybe. But i got lots of close call.Like last Sunday i put a stalk on one nice bore he was so busy with a sow not even care if i was there at 36yds he's looking at me and glower and bark like bad attitude dog try to scare me away:skeered: almost S@i% my shorts.Never know they can do that too.Shot him but missed arrow went right under by an inch.
I still have not figer out how to kill them constantly yet but work hard at it.

good hunting

Just want to wish you guys some Good Luck. I don't hunt that far south, figured I would leave something for Los Angeles. I used to live in Glendora, so I know what it's like to hunt next to millions and millions of people. During 1952 the San Gabriel River was still U.S. territory, and Glendora had just started cutting down the orange groves to build houses. Not that I don't welcome the folks from south of the boarder, because who would do the work if they weren't here? Well, you guys probably wont miss me anyway, because I'm a bucket mouth who makes maps.

Remember, these are the good-ole-days of hunting;

George, love the lack of hair on it's back that was one old sucker. I bet the plate on its back was 1 1/2" thick, did it have it's 6th year molars? Glad to hear it is good tasting hate to be that much work and stinky.

I'll be on the south side with the bow this weekend hope everyone has good luck and drives safe. I'll be in a Green GMC or a blue jeep, stop and say hi if you get a chance.

Jesse, I think you can bring someone on with the individual as long as they pony up the 550 for a pig and three days of bliss.

Kcravnit, sometimes they just like to stay in the brush and not in the openings, changes from day to day......but on Sunday with the pressure, wind and full moon it makes it extra tough. Next time walk on the edges of the thick stuff or find a cattle trail where the poison oak is all around it can be more fun that you know especially when you can hear them and watch them do their stuff right in front of you.:wavin hello:

MJB,

There was plenty of thick skin on the shoulders - I can see why you have to stay away from them when shooting a bow. Not sure on the teeth. The skull is already in the freezer and will go to Scott's bugs next time we meet up. I'll report back with the tooth count ...

Nobody can argue that that hog lived a short life - I agree ...
