Tejon is a magical place with some of the weirdest weather I've ever experienced. From the very beginning it was cold and miserable. The normal hunting areas had 1"-5" of snow.
Friday: After the brief orientation we all caravan to the concrete parking area to setup camp and get ready for the afternoon hunt. We no sooner arrived and the fog started to roll in. By 12:00 you couldn't see 50 ft from your vehicle.
We quickly chained up the jeep and headed off for the steep canyon trails, we hoped the fog wouldn't be up there but no such luck. In fact the snow was so deep near the top of the ridges we had to turn back.
Saturday: The word of the day "FOG". The fog was so bad going out in the early morning we had the jeep doors open to watch the yellow line on the pavment . The fog would lift for about an hour every two hours, When it lifted, you could see a good quarter mile but then it would start snowing. At one point it snowed good enough to blanket the entire Tejon area with over 1" of snow down low and 2" in the hills.
Sun: The fog was gone but the rain and snow were not. It started raining in the morning and continued until we left.
I did manage to pop four 350+ hogs from their bed, I got off one shot but in the end, I lost the animal. I tracked him for half of Saturday but never recovered. That's the first animal I've ever lost, it made me sick.
For all of you that got cancelled for the previous weeks trip don't feel bad. The weather was so bad the hogs were hiding in the live oaks, out of view and unless you stepped on their heads they wouldn't move.
10 hogs taken, 30 hunters.
