I'll be waiting 'til the Spring hunts. Too much happening around the holidays for me to kick out for the POR in December.

But let us know how it goes. Pics and stories are always appreciated.

Would love to go, but need to talk a certain PitDog into going with his 4x4. Should call him the MudDog after last springs adventures.

I'll never forget as we slid towards the edge, the Big Eye Tuna look on his face, as he was stepping out of the sliding truck yelling "GET OUT!!" "GET OUT!!!!"

How could I pass up another round of that kind of excitment.

Boy, that sounds almost familiar... but in my truck I think it was more like, "Oh sh**. Hold on."

Kern Killer, that should serve as notice... if you've never been to Tejon when it's wet, bring your best 4WD and all your driving skills. A winch, high-lift jack, and some heavy rope is probably a good idea too.

You know, that's OK. But you should have seen the guy at the upholstery shop when I went to have that seat replaced. He measured the "bite" you took out of that seat and had a look like Roy Scheider... "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

Fellows,
I have a Land Rover with pretty good nobbies on it and plan to go to the North side in Jan. I am sure that it all depends on rainfall but do you think I need to invest in a bit more equip before heading out? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated! Also do any of you guys bow hunt these events?
Thanks

Way to go on #500, Dilprxo!

Spyder,

Your LandRover ought to be OK if you know your limitations. Some of those roads get simply impassible, I think, and it's best to avoid the worst of them. That's where I screwed up. Unfortunately, the road I was on was the only one I knew to get back to pavement. Found out later there's another, much better road just across the ridge from where I was.
<

Some of the other roads are just ugly, slick, steep, and often banked the wrong way. Not to mention the bad ones are already rutted, so clearance may be an issue. Drive smart, and you'll probably be OK.

However, I would highly recommend at least some basic self-recovery gear. A high-lift is cool (I don't have one yet), and a come-along would be another good thing to have. Plenty of stout rope and a snatch strap would complete the outfit. If you can afford it, a winch is never a bad thing to have, but a come-along and/or high-lift will do the trick.

I haven't bowhunted the event yet, although I keep thinking about it. The thing is, by the time I spend the time, money, and mileage to get there, I don't want my opportunities to be limited. I guess for me, that's the difference between paying for a hunt and hunting for free. If I didn't spend a couple hundred bucks, I don't mind going home empty handed. But after dropping $300 for the hunt and appx. $200 for the travel, well, I plan to have some pork in the freezer.

Also, you'll be competing with rifle hunters, so to score with a bow you'll have to get well away from the roads. This makes retrieval of your animal a literal pain in the back, especially if you down a big hog. So no, I haven't tried it with the bow yet. I will say, though, that I think it's very do-able. You can get close if you can find them.

I am planning on the JHO Pig-O-Rama, but no other ones at this time. Should be fun and hopefully a little less rainy, I have heard enough horror stories that I don't want to be one of them after the hunt.
