Could somebody give me an idea where this area is on the ranch? Is it open during POR weekends?
I know I can get this info from Barbara, but has been hard to get a hold of.
Thanks.
I don't know where the bow only area is. Barbara probably won' t be able to help you because it's a differant guide service than her boss Don Grievet. You may want to try Jom Matthews from Cal Hog Hunter Magazine: odwriter@aol.com
My mistake,
I just read an article about an all womens bow hunt weekend on the ranch. The hunt took place in an area known as the "Monte" area, which I first read as a bowhunting only area.
Now, as I read the article more closely it is appearent that this area may or may not be bow hunt only that's kind of unclear.
It is however, restricted to clients of Big Country Outfitters.
Oh well, either way I am still interested where this area is exactly in relation to the North, South and Desert sides.
The pigs when pressured may view this as a safe or safer zone and move to and or from it as they feel threatened. Just a thought. Sorry for the confusion.
There is a bow only area in the north east side of the north zone. It starts with an S, I can't remember the name. It is however out of the boundaries during the Pig-O-Ramas. However, they said they have been fiddling around with the idea of an all archery Pig-O-Rama.
There is a bow only section of the ranch. I hunted it and it was awesome. However, it was the only time I hunted Tejon and I have no idea where it was in relation to the rest of the ranch. I hope that bow only Pig-O-Rama happens because I'm there.
Like Fairchase posted earlier it is called Big Country Outfitters (805) 584-6283. I'm not sure of the exact area of Tejon but its 50,000 acres. They offer semi guided hunts w/ a 35% success rate and guided w/ a 80-90% rate. All hunts are Fri-Sun and include accomadations (cabin) w/o food. Prices are $425 semi & $625 guided, w/ a second pig an additional $225. Hope this helps.
We just participated in the Jan/Feb POR. The area we were given was the "North". You have to go north on I5 to Laval road and enter ther ranch from there. We purchased a map and we were told to stay out of the archery only area. On the first afternoon we drove southeast from check in. I believe that a posted area we ran into led to the archery only area. The cabins are accessable from this area too. It is somewhere south and east from the north area check in. If I am wrong, I appologise, we were seeing hogs at the time we hit the posted area. I suppose this is my best "guess" based what I remember. If I can locate my map I'll confirm. Good Huntin!
We sure did. Luckily we filled all four tags! Last light, last night and last 10 minutes of the last day of the hunt. Saw about 40 in a group and took
3 of them. Great Trip.....Can't wait to go back.. Tom

Take your bow and hunt with it. If you take your time and hunt like I did with mine you will see hogs. Just limit youself to your comfortable range. I wasn't going to rifle hunt. Just caught those hogs in the open out of bow range and the rest is history (getting smoked). I will go back with mine and try for another good set up and shot.
Have fun with it. Walrus

One more item. It is nice to fill your tag. Take a rifle with you . I borrowed mine when the hogs started showing the last night. I wanted to take one with my longbow but felt good about the shot I "missed". I will be there again with bow in hand trying to connect. It is nice to have one in the freezer. See you out there. Thanks for the comeback. I am seriously thinking about taking either the bow or the .50 cal Hawken. I carry a .44mag on my hip, so I would be covered out to about 40-50 yards (my comfortable max with the pistol) if I can't find one in bow range.
I'm considering using the bow for stalks on Friday evening and Saturday, then switching to the -06 for the rest of the weekend. But, like you said... it sure is nice to have some pork in the freezer. My last hog is almost gone, and there's too much chicken taking up shelf space. I HATE chicken!
