Tennessee Hunter Shoots Elk While Deer Hunting
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has charged Billy F. Campbell, 68, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, with illegally killing one of the 136 reintroduced wild elk released at the Royal Blue Wildlife Management Area (WMA) since December 2000.

Ben Layton, a big game biologist for the state, says Campbell was a licensed hunter during a recent managed deer hunt on the Oak Ridge WMA and sent a friend to a check station to report he had shot the elk while deer hunting.

According to Layton, Campbell says he saw a large rack and brown fur moving in some thick brush and shot.

Tennessee doesn?t have an elk hunting season and it?s illegal to kill any wild elk in the state. Doing so is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a maximum sentence of 11 months and 29 days in jail, a fine of $2,500 and restitution of no less than $1,000 to the state for the loss of the animal.

Campbell?s scheduled to appear in Roane County General Sessions Court on November 18.

I never realized that the whitetails in Tennessee got so big that someone could confuse them for an elk!!???!!?!?!?

Just re-enforces the idea of identifying your target BEFORE you shoot. Ground-checking an animal for legal standing isn't the way to go!

Wonder just how many functioning brain cells this guy has?

When they reintroduced ELK here in PA we had a couple of cases of this happening. One guy was so proud of his 300lb "doe" he went around showing it off! He got busted as did the others. NO REASON to get the 2 confused. Maybe the PGC should require a Hunter Safey/Hunter education class once every 5 years or so. Currently we are required to have the training once and your good for life. Everyone usually takes it in Junior High School. Things (firearms, wildlife re-intro, hunting methods) change so much that most of the current weapons were not even introduced when alot of people took the training.
