Last weekend in southern Texas, 13 year old Harrison Pickett popped his very first muzzleloading boar with Jeff Flinn's HB Ltd. 10ML-II. Boar was bagged at 75 yards, and dropped in its tracks when the 250 gr. XTP did its job quite beautifully:
Congratulations to Harrison on a fine shot, and the heaviest pig of the weekend-- with some dandy teeth!
Dad, soon to be 77, made a great shot on this tusker at 105 yards. A 360 degree turn, a 180 degree spin, 21 feet and he was dead right there.
A tasty sow at 140 yards provided an opportunity to field test the Barnes 300 gr. MZ-Expander, and I was quite glad the pig was so willing to give its life for the sake of ballistic science. The Barnes painted the prickly pear cactus with a heavy hosing of crimson carnage.
All in all, just a great weekend at the Rockin' 5 Ranch in Webb County, Texas, home of some stunning 130 - 140 B.C. monster whitetails, a wonderful place to be with a group of fun people-- a very comfortable 5000 acre operation that is expertly managed by the deservedly highly-recommended Marc Stanley.
Every morning and evening, the mesquite and cactus laden landscape comes alive with fabulous whitetails, boars, javelina, bobcats, coyotes, blue quail, etc., like you wouldn't believe. Just a great piece of "God's Country" to be in, great people down to the last man, with simply terrific blinds and a well-manicured hardscape.
Special thanks goes out to Mr. Jeff Flinn for his many kindnesses and warm hospitality!
(There is something there as well about psychically forcing me to snuff a javelina as well, but that is a story for another day . . . )
