It's less than 1500 Miles.
A day and a half of driving.
I know there's a lot more to work out but it could be done.

Never afraid to try something new. Just need to make sure we pick a date that won't conflict my schedule.

Satchmo, when do you think would be a good time. Keep in mind most will be out deer hunting from Sept to Nov. Some as early as July.

Hi everyone,
<
You guys really hunt deer in july, whew, now that must be hot! The sooner the better on the pigs here in TX. Are you thinking of doing it with dogs or with guns? If you want to go after them with guns anytime would be okay, hot, but manageable. As for the dog and knife hunting, you can still hunt with the dogs but your ours of hunting will be reduced mainly to the early morning hrs. before 9am. They also hunt at night but I don't think that would be as fun because you can't film the excitement on everyone's faces!

For anyone who wants to come out let me know and I can possibly help you get it set up, maybe even host a few of you. TTFN, Cathy

I would be game if the dates worked out. I'll be in Basalt, CO until July 5th then I'm headed to TN to stay with family for a couple of months. I wouldn't mind stopping off in TX for a couple of days chasin' hogs with my bow. I was planning to stop in Arkansas to do just that. I could detour to TX. I'm a teacher, so my summer is open.

F350... Satchmo beat me to it.. Give us a little more detail on exactly what you are looking for.. Gun, bow, knife, etc.. Keep in mind that the hunting out here is a LOT different than what you are used to out at Tejon.. It is extremely hard to spot and stalk most places here... Way too much timber to spot them in the first place... If using a bow, I might suggest hunting a treestand or tripod over a feeding area like you do with deer... Hopefully between Satchmo, myself, Shadow and some other Texas hunters on here, we can find you guys a good spot to hunt. I have a baby due in a few months so probably wont make it out with you guys, but will help get you set up somewhere...

Also, you need to think about hunting them with dogs... It really is very exciting.. The only thing that I will disagree with Satchmo about is that it is an UNBELIEVABLE adrenaline rush to hunt them with knives at night... Be sure to take a video camera to catch all the excitement...

Well,
I'm thinking more towards the fall and I hunt with Guns but would love to learn how to with Knives.

I'll be talkin' to the guys over the next couple of days and get back with a more realistic time frame. I really wanna do this though.

Wow, You Texas folks are really awesome to wanna share with us foreigners.

If the dates work out for me, I'd like to go.

I'd prefer the fall also as my schedule is full for several weeks. Dogs and knives would be my preference.

Thanks for starting the thread F350!!

Man if you are going to drive all that way in the fall time frame, I would suggest to you to look into a deer hunt as well. You will be crossing alot of prime territory. Texas is BIG. My brother and I drove from Houston to the Guadalupe Mtns (just east of el paso, north of davis mtns) for a backpacking trip and that country goes on forever.. it is in the middle of nowhere between el paso and midland/odessa. I would make sure to bring home more than just the bacon

Just throwing out ideas ..
here is a pic looking east from the Guad Mtns.

Just thought I would look up the price of a non-resident hunting license for you
guys. It is $45 for a non-res special hunting, 5 consecutive days, valid for exotics,
all game birds except turkey, all non-game animals, squirrel, and javelina. There
is lots to see on the drive, but if you wanted to fly and you book in advance you
can get round trip tickets for about $225. Thought you might like to know!

Satchmo,

Like I said, I'll be coming through with my bow around July 7th. Could you hook me up on some hogs?

Guys... I think you will have a blast over here... Just a couple of things to think about.. If you come in the fall it might limit your hunting on private property a little bit.. Unless the private property only allows hogs, a lot of them will shut down for deer season and crank back up afterwards... I know that we do not run our dogs between Oct. and Jan.. You might always think about sometime in January after deer season.. It is still pretty cool and if the dogs have not been running should be plenty of hogs around... Also, right now is a great time because it still has not gotten too hot yet.. But, I am sure we could round up a place anytime you want.. Then again, if you dont hunt with dogs, you will probably be able to find a place that will let you stand hunt during deer season...

If you are also wanting to hunt whitetail, you better bring a fat wallet... Those south texas deer are NOT CHEAP... You could probably find a place that will charge by the day for unguided hunts, but you would have to be careful of what you get yourself into.. If you are looking for a good management buck or trophy, you will probably have to hunt high-fence, and it aint cheap...
