My buddy and I ran into Doccherry this week while heading up to Mauna Kea. He seems like a really nice guy, and gave us some good pointers. I tried to PM this to him, but it looks like he doesn't allow this, so I'll share it with you all in hopes he gets my thanks as well.

We drove out on the Kona side of mauna kea and ran across 6 pigs crossing the road. Perfect! I jumped out and ran up the hill to get in front of them and then got loaded up to take the shot as they came out in the open. I took a nice short 40 yard shot on the middle pig in the group, it looked like a good shot and he tumbled down about 10 yards into a small ravine. I figured it was down for good, but the darn thing got up and ran off!
To make a long story short, no pig. We looked until we had to move on and set up camp, and we didn't find anything more than some bubbly lung looking stuff by where I shot the pig. I'm bummed out as this is the first big game I've lost, but it had to happen at some point...

Anyways, we had a great time other than me being bummed about the pig, saw tons of birds, and cleaned up all the bottles and shotgun shells where we stayed the night. We didn't see any pigs from that campsite, but they may have shut off the water up there because of the drought. We poked around to the northeast and found lots of old sign, but nothing fresh... Thanks for the info, I'll be back to try it again for sure.

Doccherry, if you read this thanks! I'll try and get in touch with you again when I am back from work this fall. Maybe we can meet up on the mountain.

Read the post. Glad you saw some pigs. Yeah, the drought has taken its toll on the animals up there. That place I told you about will have tons of pigs once it starts to rain. I also know of several other spots that have pigs and sheep [and one spot that has lots of wild bulls]. Next time you plan to come over, email me [PM Evan Bouret and he'll get in touch with me] and we'll go on a hunt.

Best of luck.

Wish I could post some hunts

Larry:

I'd love to post some cool hunt stories but back in the old days when I was in the USMC and then in a traffic accident more recently and then as I tumble into old age and my body begins to decompose, the major tendon in my left shoulder has been damaged badly and recently decided to bid adios to my shoulder bone. My left arm is almost useless. I'll have surgery in a couple of weeks and they'll drill into the bone and screw in two corkscrews and attach some sutures or wires from the corkscrews to the tendon. Then it's a couple of months of doing nothing and then a couple months of rehab. So, I'm looking at hunting again in October if all goes well.

Evan Bouret and I hiked in after the wild cattle a couple months ago and each of us got a nice one. Quite a hike out with all the meat, but Evan hikes slowly because feels sorry for me because I'm so far over the hill but I feel sorry for Evan because he's always so tired from defending himself from all the gorgeous surfer ladies who want a piece of his "action." The poor guy is in great shape and is quite a good looking dude, in other words, the opposite of me, and some incredibly beautiful babes have their crosshairs on his ass.

Wish I had his problems.

Good job Hihunter,

Doc good to see you up and hunting again. When things get better I'll come and stay at the cabins near that last visitor center.
