One day in the summer of last year, I was going out and I was packed up for an 8 mile leisurely stroll in 90+ degree temps. I had given up on all hope of seeing hogs in SD. I almost overlooked the little imprint in the dried up dirt on my way out. Humm, I thought, could this be an old wallow? I finally got around to putting a camera on this spot after a rain and tah da! Pigs! I won't give any more details, except for that these are true SD hogs on public land. Only took me some of the better years of my life, many pairs of boots, countless blisters, ripped clothing, bloody knuckles, a few gouges out of my Martin Hunter (you know the shpeal).

Now all I have to do is find out where they are during daylight hours. Weather, moon phase, food, shelter, pig highways etc... IT IS ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 14 week old dog in training. If it takes me a year to get her up to speed, so be it. Those pigs WILL be mine! That bacon's going to be so fine!!!

They are out there boys! I almost gave up hope, you shouldn't either!

I saw them on two separate nights, both around 7:30pm.

I already was on my belly crawling through the oak down one of their paths. They have been rooting, but nothing substantial. I will update as I learn more!

Work the dog and consider the offer that socalhogger offered. Hell yes; The rest of us long faced 2 boots pig chasers can suck up big air while you do it right with dogs in SD... I feel & know what wolfie stated, yet we have no pigger dogs-Ha! Good fat luck and give us a story worth the read dude.

I have been back a couple of times, and each time there was nothing . The most recent rains came in May. No new prints. It wasn't till the last time that I got an explanation: the federal government set up some sort of trap in the area. It was located about a half mile deep in scrub oak. The trap was buried and had a steel grate with a 2" pvc pipe across the top. I snapped a picture of it to try to figure out what it is. I'll upload it if I can find it. I know it was a trap from the government because they politely put a sign next to it.

I spoke to a man who lives near the trailhead. He said the government has been trapping all over the county, and there were professionals with dogs recently. $#!1

Hard work and hope is now directed to Central California, where I just spent three days on public land looking for water (unsuccessfully). I didn't even see a doe.

I will go back to this spot in SD, and I will certainly provide an update if the pigs come back.

Did the Feds have to buy pig tags ? Or did California tax payers pay them to remove our animals?

here is a shot of the 'trap'. Again, there was a govt sign right next to it, calling it a trap. I don't see how this is a trap though. Anyone else have an idea?

Maybe it is like a $30,000 toilet seat. Trappers get so many dollars per trap, so they put a piece of plastic out and the sign and call it a trap and the government pays them. Whoops , I mean the hunters who buy licenses in California pay them.
