in the state too with the whole family hunting! great, great, great photos and the charging bear story has my intrest, how close?.........tra
I SHOT HIM FIRST AT ABOUT 10YDS, I THOUGHT IT WAS NICE AND TIGHT BUT HE WAS QUARTERING AT ME.
VANCE AND I BLOOD TRAIED HIM ABOUT 70 OR 80 YDS AND WE HEARD SOMTHING MOVING IN THE ALDERS.
VANCE SAID THATS YOUR BEAR! I SAID NO MY BEARS DEAD! THEN WE COULD SEE HIM MOVING FROM LEFT TO RIGH IN THE ALDERS, VANCE SAID AGAIN THATS YOUR BEAR SHOOT HIM.

I RAN PARALLEL WITH HIM BELOW ME, I LOOKED AHEAD AND SAW A HUGE RED FUR TREE THAT HAD FALLEN AND WENT HALF WAY DOWN INTO THE ALDERS SO I HOPED ON IT AND RAN DOWN IT TO GET A SHOT AT HIM.

HE CLIMED OVER THE FUR TREE ABOUT 3O YDS INFONT OF ME.

I THOUGHT YOU'VE GOT TO GET ANOTHER ARROW IN HIM OR YOU'LL LOSE HIM [I WAS MOVING WAY TO FAST]

VANCE WAS RIGHT BEHIND ME COMING DOWN THE TREE, I HAD AN ARROW NOCKED AND JUMPED OFF THE LOG THIKING HE WAS GETTING OUT OF DODGE.

THERE HE WAS LAYING DOWN FACING AWAY, HE HEARD ME AND GOT UP AND TURNED AROUND AND STARTED TO COME HEAD ON.

I CAME TO FULL DRAW, BUT THE ONLY SHOT WAS A HEAD SHOT AT A CHARGING BEAR AND I WAS'ENT GOING TO TAKE THAT SHOT, SO I WAITED FOR HIM TO TURN [ HE WAS KIND OF WAGING HIS HEADS AS HE WAS COMING].

SO I WAITED TELL IT WENT TO HIS LEFT AND BARRED A SHAFT DEEP INTO HIS NECK, HE WAS ABOUT 5YDS, HE CRAWLED AND BIT THE ARROW INTO AND I PUT ANOTHER ONE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF HIS NECK INSTANLY, HE WAS AT 3YDS.

THAT WAS IT, HE SPUN AND RAN DOWN HILL AND JUMPED ON ANOTHER BIG RED FUR THAT WAS GOING ACROSS A LITTLE VALLEY.

AS HE WAS RUNNING ACROSS, HE LOST IT IN MID AIR, BUT HE TRIED TO STAY ON THE LOG.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THE SOUND OF HIS CLAWS AS THEY WHIR SCRAPING FOR TRACTION.

HE SAILED OFF ABOUT 15-20 FEET STONE DEAD.

I TURNED AROUND TO SEE IF VANCE SAW WHAT JUST HAPPENED AND HE WAS LESS THEN 5 FEET BEHIND ME.

I SAID DID YOU SEE THAT? HE SAID, YA! I WAS THINKING WHAT AM I GOING TO TELL YOUR WIFE! THAT YOU GOT EATEN BY A BEAR.

THEN I GOT REAL LIGHT HEADED AND HAD TO SIT DOWN.

NO I DON'T HAVE A DEATH WISH. IT JUST KIND OF HAPPENED, AS I SAID EARLIER I WAS MOVING TO FAST.

I THANK GOD I DIDN'T PANIC, BECAUSE I PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE HEAR NOW, OR I WOULDBE REALLY MESSED UP.

I WAS AS COOL AS A CUCUMBER, AS IT WAS GOING DOWN.

BUT WHEN IT WAS OVER, I REALLY THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO PASS OUT.

THIS IS RIGHT WHERE HE LANDED, I HAVE NOT MOVED HIM YET

Great story, with a great result. I had the same thing happen on my second pig hunt. I placed a good shot on him, had great blood, trailed him, found him below me, walked down on him, and he charged right at me, lost my footing because of how step it was, used my bow and feet as a blocker, I deflected him down, went after him, shot again.

King, you said 4or 5 years ago you moved into the trees...are you refering to tree stands or actually hunting in timber at higher elevations above the scrub oak?

KWB thankyou so much for the reply and great story. this is my first year hunting bear with a bow and i have great respect for anyone else who dose, it is a another level of hunting to expeirience. i just came back from a 3 day hunt for deer and bear and finding fresh bear tracks of good size really gets the adrenelin going but coming face to face with a bear thats the ultimate rush of a life time.gade your here to tell the story, bear hunting stories are my favorite!
your story is one of the best bear encounter stories i have read, thank you for taking the time to tell it, i will read it again and again............tra

"This thread is better than most of the shows on the Outdoor Channel ! ! !"
Especially coming out of one person. Some shows don't have the quality shown amongst all their big name hosts...

Why would you add that to one the best posts ever!!!! King has had quite an accomplishment in his hunting career. Big deal if thats his business and its on his profile card, hes not advertising that in his posts.

OPENING DAY - D-11 ARCHERY.

CASEY'S FIRST DEER HUNT EVER!

SCORES WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM HIS FRIEND, CALEB.

HERE'S THE SKINNY.

WE HAD HUNTED THE MORNING AND IT WAS VERY HOT.

WHILE AT THE TRUCK GETTING READY TO LEAVE AND CHANGING OUR CLOTHES A SMALL HERD OF 2 DOES, 2 SPIKES AND THIS SPIKE FORK CROSS THE ROAD IN FRONT OF US.

THE BOYS GRABBED THEIR BOWS AND SAID "ONE IS LEGAL." I FOLLOWED BEHIND THEM.

THE DEER MOVED INTO THE TREES AND CASEY SHOT QUARTERING AWAY AT ABOUT 20 YARDS, HITTING HIM IN THE HIND QUARTER.

CALEB RAN TO THE LEFT TO CUT THE BUCK OFF AND TO SEE IF HE COULD GET A SHOT, AND HE DID. HITTING HIM IN HIS RIGHT SHOULDER.

HE YELLED AT CASEY "HE IS GONNA COME TO YOU". CASEY HIT HIM RIGHT THROUGH THE CHEST, WHICH IS THE ARROW YOU SEE WITH NO FLETCHING.
(THIS IS THE EXIT).

THEN CALEB RAN DOWN AND FINISHED HIM OFF. ITS NOT PRETTY AND IT'S NOT BIG, BUT IT IS LEGAL. AND IT'S HIS FIRST DEER EVER.

BOTH BOYS JUST TURNED 18. WE DID SEE A 3X2, BUT HE WAS FAR AWAY AND IT WAS WAY TOO HOT TO GO AFTER HIM.

Congrats on the buck. Not big. But legal and probably one of the very very few that was taken yesterday in the zone. Can you say HOT! (I missed yesterday)

KWB,
Best I have ever seen, read, or even heard stories about.
All that hunt so. cal know how hard it is to take a deer with our conditions. Knowing the terrain, weather, and small numbers of quality deer make it all that more impressive to me. It's not where you get, it's how you get there.
Thank you for your posts. Very Motivational.

I suspect your posts have made the sale of recurves shoot up 300% in so. cal. (mountain bikes too!) TAKE THAT SOLO-CAM!!!!!!

How many deer have you slapped on the butt????? The guy who got me into bowhunting used to tell me stories of guys in so cal. that were such great stalkers they would for fun, sneek up on beded deer and slab them on their butts and there was one guy who could spot, stalk, and slap any deer he went after. I was just a kid when he told me. He told me to motivate me, make me a better stalker and hunter. It was one of those stories that you hear and think about later and say that can't be true, but what if it is. What if there is a man who can hunt like the big cats? What if there is a man who can move through the brush like the shadow of a cloud. What if this great stalker exists?
