SierraFool There's a good reason for a few different opinions on when the rut starts in LA County.

The first thing you will see is the bucks coming out of velvet and getting ready to do battle with other bucks, this is about a 30 day period.

Next they will start to stage up, what does this mean? it means their on the move a little, checking who's out there and where are the doe's, this is about a week or 2 before any breading, this is a good time to catch a buck out cruising.

Next they find a hot doe and this is the time to strike, I think this is around the 2ND week in Oct for elevation 4,000 feet and up to about 7,000 feet. however last year it was 2-3 weeks late, why? I don't know.

It also changes [ in my opinion ] by elevation, so if your hunting at 1,000 feet and I'm hunting at 6,000 there could be two weeks before my deer start to rut. [ that's why there are so Meany opinions about when the rut go's off ]

They will rut a hot doe as long as they think they might get some, if the doe is in, he will not leave her no mater what, ya! even if he sees you, smells you, and hears you, now he might make a wide circle around you, but if you get in the circle of the doe he will come by, this is why the rut is so power full for the would be hunter.

I have found rut activity in July, Aug. Sept. Oct. Nov. Dec. and even in January, that's 7 month's! ya! I know! and all in LA county, now this was not at one spot, the elevation went from 200 feet to 7,000 feet and the higher the later the rut.

If your trying to time the rut, your on the wrong track, Why? because it changes every year, some times it's early and some times it's late and most miss it because their trying to time it.

Now if your in the field every chance you get, checking on your spots, finding out whats going on with YOUR DEER thin you will know when the rut go's off at your spots.

If a doe is only in estrus for 24 hr and you went hunting on Sunday and don't get back into the hills until the next Saturday you missed the whole thing.

In a nut shell, the rut changes every year and in every area by some times a week or two, which if it's late your still cool, but if it's early you missed it

lan-lord I think I look pretty good for the 8th day. LOL. besides this is one of the better pic's

Yo! SNOOP, we where seeing 30 + does a day but only a few bucks and all small.

I don't think the big boys like hanging out with the elk [ to loud ]

I think they where another thousand feet or so above us.

But doesn't it just look like there should be a monster buck hanging out here

QUOTE (THE ROMAN ARCHER @ Sep 8 2006, 08:22 AM)
KWB i am just curious if you like to shoot compound bows at all, i was a trad archer many years ago but due to shoulder injury it was very painfull to hold the bow at draw with fingers so i had to start shooting a compound with a release to pull more from the wrist instead of fingers and that resolved my shoulder pain issue and kept me in archery. but its been my desire to shoot traditional bow again and now since you joined its help me make up my mind to do so. i am going to buy a recurve in one month with lower poundage and set it up with a release and give it a try, i hope that works i love the simplicity of trad bows and i want to take one out to the feild and hunt again the traditional way , thanks for joining JHO KWB........................tra
'THE ROMAN ARCHER' Right on! I hope you have as much fun as I have with my bow.

No, I have no interest in compounds at this time, maybe when I'm old and crippled and cant pull a real bow, I might shoot one then, but only so I could keep hunting.

It would be like going out on a date with some one your not really interested in, but it's better than staying home and who knows, you might get lucky.

You see, I love the warmth of wood and the beautiful lines of a traditional bow, Kinda like the lines of a beautiful woman, like the silo-wet of Marlane Monro against the sun rise or like the silo-wet of Raquel Welsh at sun set.

To me the compound is like a gymnastics chick who has had to Meany cheeseburgers and donuts, her shoes are to tight and she has way to much jewelery on, shes to short and to heavy, but shes wound tight though! and will get the job done, there's just no love their.

You don't even have to spend any time with her, the mail order will set every thing up, just like a pimp, when your ready, grab all your gadgets and your ready to go, the next season, just pick it up and your ready again, no need to spend a lot of time with her.

The stick bow on the other hand though, is grace full and elegant, light and limber, she'll let you know if you haven't payed her much attention, you have to spend time with her, for her to treat you right, and when she doe's, it's pure magic!

There's nothing more beautiful than to watch your arrow arc a cross to you Target, smooth and silent, as your brain, and nothing else, made it happen.

No, my stick bows not high strong, probable could not beat anyone in speed or in accrues, but, in every other area I'll take her, it's pure romance.

bearclaw, she'll get over the bow a lot sooner than you being gone all the time. LOL

Thanks, your comments are exactly why I did this post.

Most people don't realize how good it is right here in down town Los Angles / So. Cal.

Ya, it's hot, steep, and brushy and there's mostly fork-n-horn, but it's close and I can go all the time.

I am still trying to figure where to start here in the Santa Barbara area, but there is plenty of real estate out there, just have to find an area to work and get out in it.

WOW I FINALLY CAUGHT UP TO THE END OF THIS POST. THANKS FOR THE RIDE. I TOO WOULD LIKE TO TRY TRADITIONAL GEAR. MY FATHER BOWHUNTED THAT WAY. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO TAKE SOMETHING WITH HIS OLD BOW.

ANYWAY THANKS FOR THE TIME YOU PUT INTO THIS. IT IS A TRIBUTE TO YOUR LIFE AND THE MEMORIES YOU HAVE MADE FOR YOUR KIDS. KEEP IT GOING.
