Hey guys! I was looking for a hunting club in the bay area that a hog/big game club and i found the bullmoose hunting society. They looked kinda alright to me but i just wanted to check with you guys. They are based in SF and I am wondering what you guys have heard about them/ what you guys think about them, scam or legit? Do you recommend joining? Are there any pig hunting/deer clubs in the bay area or surrounding areas?

Heres a link to their website: www.bullmoosehunting.com

Thank you guys

There was an article about them a couple of months ago in sfgate (online version of SF Chronicle newspaper). They are not a "hunting club" per se but a group that pool together resources and share game. Bull Moose Hunting Society goes for the kill It is a great idea if you're young and didn't grow up hunting, because a big part of their mission is to teach people where real meat comes from, but they are not the kind of club that has a couple hundred acres of private land locked up for only members to hunt. I don't know your experience, Caviel, but if you're new to hunting they might be just the ticket.

Sounds like a good idea, and these guys are sticking their necks out to make something for the city dwellers who otherwise have no resources. I grew up in SF, and while I knew some hunters that took me out, it's not easy. Heck, it's worth $50 just meet somebody that hunts in SF...

I've tried emailing these guys twice and my email keeps getting returned. If anyone gets in contact with them please inform me of how to do so myself.

I had them lined up for an email interview, and we swapped some emails, but they never replied when I sent my questions. Dunno what's going on.

Last time we talked, they weren't taking new members. I'm sure that newspaper article got them a lot more attention than they were ready for.

I was hping not so much to become a member as such, but to become directly involved in the growth of the club itself. I was thinking my sausage making experience in addition to my food and hunting background that I would be able to contribute on more than just a member level. Not to mention my butchering background and career and being a licensed game processor and such I'd be very interested in getting involved with them. I'll keep trying.

Bux, that's exactly the kind of support they were looking for last time I talked with them. One of the reasons they cut off membership (as I understood it) was too many non-hunting members and not enough hunters to provide meat for everyone. That's the downside of the "Co-operative" model in such an urban environment.

Stay on it, and see if they finally break loose with an email.

I just joined Bull Moose about a month ago. I was skeptical at throwing $50 at them, but I went to a happy hour meeting at a bar in SF and they seemed like good guys. There were about 30 people or so interested in joining at that meeting; this was in early July.

I joined because I wanted SF based folks to hunt with, and because as a self taught hunter with about 6 years experience, I know how difficult it can be to get started. And I have unlimited access to about 400 acres of prime hog land, so I have a huge advantage over most new hunters.

The original intent of the club was as co-op hunt/meat share type thing, but it has morphed into a way to pair up more experienced hunters with new hunters, or people who have never hunted. Its amazing how many people there are in SF that want to try hunting.

As far as lack of responsiveness goes, they have received a lot of publicity lately, and are swamped with emails and inquiries. So Speckmisser, bear with them and they will (hopefully) get back to you. In the mean time I'd be happy to field questions about the club as best I can, although not in any official capacity. Feel free to email me if you have questions, or we can continue this thread, if it is ok with the moderators and admin. You can email me at hyperjike )at( hotmail.com

And Bux, they have a real need for experienced hunters, so for their sake, I hope you keep trying to get hold of them. I'd be happy send the two founders an email suggesting they follow up with you, if you'd like.
