Steve and I have been working one of the rifle areas on VAFB and seeing a few hogs. Mostly sows but a couple of decent boars; always in a bad spot to get to or get back FROM if you know what I mean. Friday night Steve wanted to set up on a big toad of a boar he'd spotted Wednesday night, but on the way down we spotted a group of seven hogs a mile or so in the opposite direction. He dropped me off several hundred yards away so the truck wouldn't spook 'em and I hiked over to where we'd last seen 'em. They had already moved off. I figured they had gone down-canyon and I wouldn't see 'em again if they did. As I was not far from my truck I figured I'd work the canyon back toward my rig and wait for Steve from there. As I came out on the side of the hill I spotted one of the hogs directly below me and soon all 7 were out, moving diagonally away from me. I side-hilled across to where I could get a good look at 'em to see if there was a boar in the group. One of the dark hogs then tried to mount another hog, which is usually a pretty good sign! (They were just too hairy and it was a little too dark to resolve a pecker from 180 yards). As soon as that hog cleared and turned broadside I crosshaired him and cut loose with my 700 lss in .300 win mag. I'm shooting a 168 gr. TTSX handload and I heard the hit and he took off over a little rise. When I hiked down (of course!) to where he disappeared, he was lying right there, dead. Right through the heart and he went 30 feet.

I called Steve on the radio; "Pig Down" and reached for my knife. It was in my pack 200 yards up the hill, where I left it. Along with gloves, flashlight, headlight etc. So, I hiked up and got what I needed, hiked down and gutted him out. As I had another 30 minutes or so I decided to hike back up, get my gear and take it all to the truck and deploy the cart. Steve showed up about then and we went down and pulled him out. It took over an hour to go 250-300 yards! Did I mention it was kinda steep? We checked him in the next morning and he gutted out at 147 lbs. Great condition and he cleaned up well--schnitzel! It was a fun hunt.

We only took a couple of shots with the camera phone, but here's one.

A fine swine! Nice shooting.

That rifle is a stone killer. I like that gun better for pure-D hunting better than any other gun I've ever handled. It took a lot of work to get it to that point, but it was worth it. There's just something about the 700 action, and the stock is perfect for looking through a scope. It also shoots (almost) one hole groups with hot Barnes handloads.
