The DFG money sponge: The current price for a fishing license for residents of the Bay Area is $30.70, along with the $3.70 striped bass stamp, making it $34.40, the highest priced license in America. In the back rooms of Sacramento, the DFG wants to add a $5 stamp for the Bay-Delta (for which the DFG does not have a spending plan), on top of an annual automatic increase for what they call the inflation index (yeah, right). If approved, next year's license could cost just under $40.
-- Now get this, Part I: A five-year license in Florida, which has comparable (if not better) freshwater and saltwater fishing, and better state fishing programs than in California, costs $60 -- that is, $12 per year.
-- Now get this, Part II: Lifetime licenses for both fishing and hunting in West Virginia, including three deer tags per year, for a child under 2 costs $280. In California, it costs $600, with an additional charge of $19.25 per year for two deer tags, or another $481.25 (not adjusted for increases) for 25 years of hunting. That makes the real price about $1,100, four times the price of West Virginia, for an experience that is hardly four times as good (and in many cases, is worse).
