There is a big black boar near Jolon CA that lives a charmed life. This is the first time I saw him on private land near Fort Hunter Liggett CA. I have only had glimpses of this hog over the past few years. Other hunters have also just caught glimpses of him.
This video is the Ghost Pig with what we think was his twin. It's not common to see big older boars running in pairs from my experience. Both boars were pushing 300 pounds and the smaller brother was killed in Area 7 in 2004, just a stone's throw from where this video was shot. I helped hang him on the scale and he tipped the needle to 299 lbs. The hunter shot one tusk off with the first shot and never found it.
We named him the Ghost since the first night we saw him we just got glimpses of him in the high grass and the low light. I would later see him in this same area and just get a peek every once in awhile, sometimes just his snout poking up in the grass to wind for danger. I imagined I was hunting those lions in the tall grass of Africa.
Several times I thought I had him cornered or cut off and I'd come up with air and empty trails. Westy and FFF ran into him in area 30 and Westy missed him at 50 yards with a shotgun.
The curse lives on.
