Sooooo....I have been out on Palomar looking for these wild boars... I spoke with a ranger and he told me that the pigs had moved from the Julian area to the Palomar area and that he had seen them with his own eyes. A crew of us went to Julian a while back and found nothing...so they must have been on the move...Well, No luck....I still thought they were ghost. Up until yesterday.

Yesteray My wife was driving in Wine country in Temecula (30 to 40 min from Palomar) and she caught a big black boar running arcoss the road on video on her cell phone. It was proabably about 120 to 140 lbs....unfortunately she did not have her rifle with her and she was working.... But at least we now know they are not "ghost pigs" and they are out there..Once I get the video from her phone I will post it.....

Im just throwing it out there. I believe it is illegal to shoot/hunt from a public road unless it is BLM land. But if you can hunt them on the surrounding land. Then tell her to keep it in the car!!

I'm sure most here would not jump shoot from a public road, much less run through private property and/or reservation land to persue these ghost herds of pigs in this area. While spotting one is a good sign, I'm still not convinced there is a large enough population to support the erradication efforts proposed by the federal officials.
Good luck tracking them. I hope you get to the ghost pig hideout before the federal slayer program fires up.

No, my wife and I are not "road hunters"....and yes, we both know, there is lots of private property out there in the wine country (almost if not all the land is private) and we would not trespass to take an animal. Not only that, but she was on the clock, working. So she would not be hunting. My whole point of that little story was, the pigs are there. They have made it as far as Temecula. There may not be a whole heard, or even a huntable amount, but she has at least seen one now and she does not think I am making up stories about wild illusive pigs. Hopefully it will inspire her to get out there in the brush a little more often...The little story was not about her going out and getting a pig off the road. Or in someone's yard....... :) And Marty i agree with ya, the proposed erradication efforts would be a total waste of tax payer money.

Cheers
Todd

And Caesar's spirit, raging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

.......
I'm gonna get them dern pigs back for making fools of us last month!

My 'deer scouting' (err - or - wife is out of town so's I get two nights in the woods in August) trip's just turned into a 'wife's gonna wonder where all that sausage came from' trip...

Thanks for the update Todd! It's nice to know we weren't that far off on our last trip!!!

I doubt they are living in vineyards, but I KNOW they love grapes. My own pig will eat grapes till her eye's cross. They're traveling to and from the vineyards, somehow, and you've been handed a clue. Time to start looking around, find the pathways and setting up an ambush.

Of course, this all hinges on land access....which can be a deal killer.

Kevin...let me know when you are going in August, maybe it can work out I can meet you out there again.....I am very close to Palomar and know a lot of the back roads..I have lots of maps and have been up on the North Side a couple times. Also, you can camp at Indian Flats which is also part of D-16 and its about 10 to 15 miles from the Divide....

Got a couple does on my cameras on Palomar too. Hoping for a pig, but nothing yet. Talked to a landowner who had seen 2 hogs, and successfully trapped and killed one of them. I slipped in a "Do you allow hunting", and got a quick "No"..... LOL

Not sure if it was a wild pig or someones lost pet pig....the more I watch the video, the more it looks like a potbelly to me.....such short little legs. I would like to believe it was a SD pig....
