Greetings all. Since everyone's neck is all swollen up right now (mine too), I though it would be fun for you guys to hear a hunting story.

This took place in the mid 80's. The place was area 96, the Windriver mountains, western Wyoming. My good buddy Jim and I were into the 3rd day of bow season. At first light we were be-bopping along on a small old logging road just inside of the wildnerness boundry, headed to one of our honey holes. Walking along, not sneaking, when all of a sudden our noses filled with the pungent smell we love.
Ok you go up there and I'll paralell you down here, Jim said. We stayed in sight of each other and started creeping. About 60 yards later, I see this spike walking away from me. He disappeared into some short pines. I cow called and immedatly heard a bark. Game over I said to myself. Then the spike appeared looking straight at me, 50 yards. 30 seconds later, the spike barks again, but does not move. Just then, Jim cow calls and the spike's attention turns to him. I let out a very soft mew and the spike takes 4-5 quick steps in my direction, stops and barks. Jim calls and he whips around and dissapears. I call and he trots out stopping 25 yards away. Jim calls and Mr. Spike barks, spins and hauls butt. Less than a minute later, there's the sound of a cow behind me. I turned to look but saw nothing at the time. Jim called and when I turned back around, Mr. Spike was standing broadside at 12 yards. He looking all around for them cows! He barks again and leaves. Big ruckus behind me as I hear elk leaving. I mewed again, and I'll be damned if the spike didn't run back out in the open. Jim called and the spike would look in his direction, I'd call and he'd look for me, Jim squeeks, I squeek and poor Mr. Spike can't see us. This went on for over 30 minutes finally he went above me and caught my scent. When I walked down to Jim, he was litterally rolling on the forest floor laughing. That spike barked 18 times, and gave me many opportunities to stick him. We had cow tags in our pockets, but what fun. True story gentlemen.
Thanks for reading.

Last year I had two spikes come into my cow calls together. Both "barked at me for about ten minutes. Damnest sound from an elk. They were not frightened, just trying to talk the "cow" out of the thick stuff. I was many miles from camp and looking for a big boy, so they lived to see another day.
