Michelle's was actually the hardest fighting of all the pigs we have killed so far. At 250lbs with dog killer teeth
<
he certainly did not go down easy.She stayed with it for about two minutes until he finally gave it up. He had holed up in the center of a briar patch and was slinging dogs left and right, what a fight! She was victorious in the end and the smile has not faded yet!

Outstanding Job Cathy,

I hope to get my first knife hog when I head out to Texas in about 5 weeks. Any pointers or do's and don't I should be aware of?

Jess.

Cool story & pic. I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, but 250lbs might be a little generous on the size of the hog... My

Okay hogskin, you got me,
<
but not by much. When we got him home and on the scale he weighed 156lbs. The guide told us you can add back one/third of the weight for all that inside stuff. That would mean he weighed 234lbs alive. The big one my other sis Barbara and I got together weighed 290lbs on the scale, which mean he would have weighed 435lbs. On the video of this hunt you can hear the guide saying he estimates the weight to be around 325lbs. We caped it out so I can have the head mounted. The thing on the shoulder they call a "SHIELD" was three inches thick, WHEW! and weighed 25lbs per each side from the back legs to his middle. Anywhoo he is delicious, already made a roast, yummy, Cathy

Okay, let's see:

156/3 = 52
156 + 52 = 208

Check my math, I ain't so good with numbers.
<
Anyway, I was guessing around 200+/-. I prefer them about 200 or less. Good grubbing to you.

Actually Hogskin, Sactchmo had it correct the first time. You don't multiply 156lbs by one third. Once it was cleaned, its 156lbs represents two thirds of the hog's overall weight. The other third was the guts. Its been quite a while since I've had to use algebra but I think it should be:

156lbs / x = 2 / 3
468lbs = 2x
x = 234lbs

Great pics by the way.

Yeah, I've always heard that the 1/3 came from the gutted weight. Maybe I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. No matter, it's still a darn nice oinker and I'd have been glad to have killed it.

This from a guy who goes on a hunt with Chopper and gets skunked, and then posts a make believe story about how he whacked a 400lb hog. "Gimme an L! Gimme an O! Gimme an S! Gimme an E! Gimme an R! What's that spell??" "SPECKMISSER!!"

Wow, I can tell you guys get along great!!
<
Bobcat, my only tips
and suggestions are that on the big ones, 150lbs or more, use at least a 7" blade,
and not the type Michelle is holding in her picture(no tanto blades), use a Bowie
blade with a needle point, and they also told me a double edge works well. If he's
big try to go in under the shield, that thing is tuff! Go in at a forward angle, not
straight in, Michelle found that out, straight in doesn't get the heart. And do not
hesitate
<
scary and you know the damage boars can do, but good dogs
do not let go! They're taking me hunting for turkey this weekend, never been!
Wish me luck!!

Seriously, good luck and post up your success.

And Frogskin... I'll have to chew on that one for a while.
