The Roman Hog Adventure

The day started out in town a little after 9. Everyone was anxious to get rollin but alas.....we had one tardy fellow. TRA said he would probably be in his "fast and furious" car but when he finally rolled in with the 4x4, everyone jumped in their rigs and we were off.
Fast forward...............................
Got here, took the tour, saw lots of deer and coyotes, good pig sign, now it's 3:00, they are all out huntin, and IT'S POURIN DOWN RAIN!

can't wait to hear the good report...I love hunting boars when it's raining! 1st experience (w/ hntboar) was when it was wet and a mutual acquaintance score a nice big hog!

I'll let the guys tell their stories when the hunt is done but here's a quick update.

Rain was UGLY!!! But 2 arrows flew yesterday and both missed the mark.

This morning it's clear and cold!

Hogs were seen at first light and the stalking is on. Noone has reported in yet..........

No shots this mornin. a couple pigs seen, lots of fresh sign after the inch of rain we gor yesterday. It is still really cold up here with a colder breeze blowin.

Hello all,

Well I made it back in one piece. What an epic time over at Chopper's this past weekend!! This is my third hunt there, and each time it gets better an d better. We all met at Safeway and headed off to the ranch on Friday morning. I barely got any sleep the night before so I was on 8 shots of espresso with a chaser of the "huntin' Jones'"!!

We split up into two groups for the tour de la swine; one group with Chopper and the other with Mike (aka: Kelly106). Let me just say that Mike is a class act guy. He went out of his way to help us anyway he could and has good knowledge of the ranch and it's honey-holes. I hope to be able to hunt with him one day!! side note: TRA decided not to take the tour, as he has been to the ranch quite a bit and immediately started to hunt. :archer green:

After the tour, we headed back to the cabin and made our game plan. I decided to give the famous "DP Canyon" a try. We had some rain trickling down, which made the ground nice and quiet. I stalked up the hillside, taking my time, and surveying as much as I could. Stopping, looking and smelling (I have smelled more hogs before I have seen them).

I made it to the top of the hill to the fence-line and started to head quietly Southward, following the fence-line. Right at 5pm. Boar spotted.

The boar was rooting and walking the whole time; never looking up. I positioned myself so that a few trees were between me and his head. 50 yards... 45, 40, stop. Sneak up a little more. Now we are at 34 yards. It is a nice, nice, super nice boar. The commie bastard is at least 275 lbs. Now 34 yards is a long shot for my recurve, but I can hit up to that. So I pick a spot on his front shoulder and let my cedar arrow fly. It hits about 1 inch below the mark. Nice clean miss (the best kind). He looks up, snorts and....goes right back to eating. What!??!

I knock another arrow. Cedar #2.

I knock old cedar #2. Prepare to pull back, and that fat turd bolted!! Gone! Over the valley.

It's all good. I am smiling from ear to ear from the whole experience. So, I walk a little further in the same direction, why not... it worked before.

*sniff* Yep, I smell something....again.
