The True Harbinger of Spring - High Country Trout Stockings

AGFD

3/31/03

The harbinger of spring for some is going to a spring training baseball game. But for a lot of Arizona anglers, it is the first trip to the high pines to catch some trout.

" We are at the leading edge of the high-country trout season - spring stockings at many waters commence this week," says Roger Sorensen, hatcheries program manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Thanks to good snow pack and decent runoff, it's shaping up to be a good season. In fact, many high country lakes are still not accessible due to snow. So watch the reports - when they open up anglers are in for a treat this season. You can access the fishing reports and the stocking schedule on the Web at azgfd.com. In fact, you can sign up on-line to have the weekly fishing report delivered directly to your computer.

The key to the great spring fishing might not necessarily be the trout stockings this spring, but which waters received bonus stockings last summer and fall: those were Big Lake, Woods Canyon and Willow Springs (none of which are accessible yet).

The following waters are scheduled for rainbow trout stockings this week: Ashurst, Bear Flats, Beaver Creek, Black Canyon, Christopher Creek, City Reservoir, East Verde River, Fool Hollow, Haigler Creek, Kaibab Lake, lower Salt River, Oak Creek, Rainbow Lake, Santa Fe, Show Low Lake, Tonto Creek, West Clear Creek, Whitehorse Lake, Willow Springs, and Workman.

The following waters are being stocked the week of April 7: Bear Canyon, Cataract, Christopher Creek, East Clear Reservoir?, East Verde, Fair Lake, Haigler Creek, Hulsey Lake, Lynx Lake, Marshall, Mingus, Mormon Lake Pond, Nelson Reservoir, Oak Creek, Rose Canyon, Tonto Creek, tunnel?, Woodland and Woods Canyon.
