I think your missing the point bra. Getting the license plate number and being able to track the guy down to have an unscheduled "Sit down" will certainly be enough for him to stop. While your there you should ask the man what he thinks should happen if you physically find him in your property lines again. Let the guys imagination work for him. Likely far worse than anything else you can say to the guy.

1. You are not able to obtain this info.
2. He will call the police on you that you are harassing him and intruded in his house. Do you want this?
3. If you meet him at your property you are not able to do anything to him physically since he is going to report you and guess how is going to loose....
4. There is i chance he is a complete frik and to defend himself he is going to shoot you... Do you need that?

Nick, the fact that you did not see him does not mean he wasnt there... Besides, you do not want to harm anyone on your property, it will cost you .... You even do not want to approach him with a gun...

Tracking down one trespasser is like going to the house of every person that talks smack on the internet, to beat them up.

You can't control every trespasser in the world. Sometimes you just have to let it go and focus on what you CAN control-- posting signs, being present more, even making your trail cameras visible (with locks). It doesn't take much to encourage someone to take their Sunday stroll elsewhere.

People tend to go the path of least resistance. Unless of course they have a personal vendetta against you. In that case they may go to great lengths to see your demise. Speaking of which, there is no faster way to give someone a vendetta against you than to show up at their house making threats. Not to mention that would be a huge waste of time.

Ahhh yes, JustGuy my friend i think u can relate, my father came from the old country to america with very little money to start a family and live the American dream. He worked hard many years to acquire our little 50 Acer farm. when I was young we could not have pets and my dad said if we had a farm we can have all the pets we want and being under ten years old I would would dream of having a farm because I wanted animals and pets so bad, so one day my dad takes the whole family out for a country ride and we where visiting these people and they had all kinds of animals on a farm and I said to my dad I wish we had a farm and he looks at me and says now we do this is our new house and farm. I was very young to try understand a lot of stuff butt that was the most exciting day of my life to leave a city in New York and move out to the country but I was so excited until I realized how much hard work it is to run a farm with livestock at ten years old, so being the oldest and only boy my father made me bust my a$$ growing up to do all the choirs and land work for years growing up to maintain the farm.
My dad worked hard for years to pay it off completely and it became great whiptails property that everyone desired after all the years we put into developing it. We had trespassing signs all a long the boarder and me and my dad almost walked that property daily.
So to make a long story short me and my family did not tolerate trespassers who did not respect us and our property and thought they just come over and help them selfs, hell no. After all my father did for us and the family to live the American dream to come from the old country across the seas and then to have that totally disrespected by trespassers and poachers u are damn right that our Italian Sicilian side we take respect very seriously and when u cross that line u will pay the price, it's our land not yours and we would do anything to protect that from trespassers and poachers and I would expect u would do the same to my friend, ARE U JUST GOING TO LET SOMEONE JUST WALK ALL OVER U ON YOUR OWN LAND AND KILL YOUR WHITETAILS ARE U SERIOUS! HELL NO! Finding poached deer on your property where the just wanted the racks and would leave the rest to rot was sicking my friend, And I let trespassers no that by communication first time when i catch them that if I catch them on our property again, oh well u where warned. And I would think that any other land owner who put there life and soul to have totally paid off property for there family would do the same. So yes I am very over protective of our land that's my freedom and I will exercise that right at all cost. If anyone knows me I am the nicest guy but I let u know that homie don't play that straight up and when I read bisonics post I totally related to my JHO brother and that's why I would do anything to help him out with his trespasser situation, does this make any sense to u all my friend. Poachers and trespasser don't deserve any kind of rights at all over u as the land owner, F them and I hope they get bit by a rattler when trespassing.

We've learned something from the Chai Vang incident. If you decide to confront the guy, just be very cautious. Otherwise just continue to feed the sheriff with videos and pictures and more complaints. They will eventually do something.

All, thanks for your input. I have no desire to turn this into a violent confrontation and certainly know that law enforcement has limited time and ability to pursue a trespasser with little proof. What I'm trying to accomplish is what Cottonwood mentions above, namely to deter what I hope is just a chickens__t by letting him know that I'm on to him in some manner. If he gets the idea that he's been spotted I'd guess he stops, that's all I'm hoping for.

All u can do is keep catching him on cam and collect all the evidence of the trespass... Keep on reporting it...once they or u know who the guy is...the authorities will issue him a citation of $750 for trespassing...than if he does it again...its jail plus fine...keep your cool...not worth dying or killing someone and end up in law suits or jail time...I hope u catch this guy or deter him...

Also...why not print a picture of him and post it by your no trespass signs and write down" I know what u doing and I got u on film...do not trespass again because I m watching u"

I just got back from a trip to the ranch and no signs of anyone on the five cameras I have hidden. I should have mentioned that I'd put up a couple signs that said something like "To the dirtbag who stole my game cameras: You got two, but not all of them. I have your picture. Bring them back or I'll take it to the Sheriff and put it up all over the internet". Those went up before I caught the guy on video, so he probably saw one of them. Hopefully that will keep him away.

Please understand, i never advocated to tolerate trespassers or poachers or thieves. What i wanted to relay that in California the system is so twisted that you might pay a huge price for defending your property or standing up to a thief, and you need to be very careful and smart how to do so... Being in real estate business i met and heard so many weirdest situations when a home owner payed huge sums of money to thieve or traspasser or spent time in jail and a lot of money on lawyers. My word was to approach this situation cold minded and smart. There is no problem to defend your estate, the problem is to defend it right. And there is no doubt none of us would or should tolerate it including myself.
In my opinion the OP got one of the best possible solutions. No confrontation, no threatening, no arguments.
But imagine if he caught him and broke his legs. How much this endeavor would cost to OP? That is all i wanted to say, hope it is clear.

i hope you catch that guy, cause its people like him that ruins it for everyone. i know understand why landowners don't allow people to hunt on their property. But people like myself who are teaching his 11 and 14 year old sons how to follow all laws and rules to allow hunting for them when they get older. that garbage that a person has to post signs and cameras on their own property. sorry. You are right. He could have a gun. I was just saying that I didn't see one. I also didn't see any saddle bags and the guy has short sleeve shirt. He did have a rope so that leads me to think its a cowboy and not some other kind of horse rider. Looks like joy riding to me. I have been riding horses since I was 5 and I like to ride all over the place. Was just wondering if maybe it was a cowboy out for a little day ride. I know he should still not be on your land. That's why I asked if it is posted. If it is not posted and it is just a guy on a joy ride, he may not know were your land starts and other land stops. It would be nice to allow him to ride on the land. Maybe he could help keep a eye on your land and make sure things are ok out there. A horse is a good way to see things that you may not see if just walking around. It gives you a higher view point and also lets you cover much more ground.
