Thinking about it (again)

I have, off and on, wanted to build an AR. BUT, I'm torn on caliber.

The main reason I want one is to teach with. So, .22 is good since it's cheap and has no recoil to speak of. BUT, maybe I wanna shoot stuff with it besides paper. So bigger is better right? BUT, the gun safe is nearly full, wifey is starting to say NO! and mean it, and I don't really need more rifles anyway.

Thus, my dilemma.

What would be the best overall caliber for teaching and shooting in an AR?

you are forgetting that the AR can be easily changed out to a different caliber... 22 to 223 conversion is fast and easy all you change out is the bcg and magazine.

Well, while I was at the store fondling, er, LOOKING at my new S&W 22A pistol before it went away to 10-day jail, I was talking with the guys there about getting an EBR and the intended use (teaching). I've been kinda ambivalent on the whole AR thing and not really interested in them other than as a teaching tool. I was handed this nice looking AR in .22 (don't remember what brand) and OH MY GOD!!!

This thing is a dream. Seriously. Shouldered it in tight, laid my cheek on the stock and I was looking right down the center of the peep sight. Length of pull, drop, etc were PERFECT. I have ALWAYS had to modify LOP and use taller scope mounts and cheek pads on traditional rifles. Not on this platform.

Aparently being a modern designed weapon for use by all kinds and shapes of military personnel, the ergonomics didn't have to follow any "traditional" format or appearance and that resulted in a rifle that actually FITS correctly without modification or alteration.

I am amazed. I am in lust. Honey, we gotta get a bigger gun safe...
