If the weather was anything like what we had up here in the Bay Area, they had the better weather. Maybe not for camping and driving on the dirt roads, but for hunting they probably had 3-5 hours of activity more than what we saw. Great to hear there was this much success. Can't wait for footage!

Are you telling me that there was a bottle of Tequila hidden out there that we didn't know about???? Good thing. The whiskey was enough for me to sleep through the alarm clock on Sunday morning. Ouch.

Great trip. As good as it gets. The south gate was at 58% when we checked out at noon on Sunday. We went 6 or 8. I had my rookie buddy on three no-brainers. He missed.

Weather was very nice. Very overcast, and light rain on Friday. Clear as a bell and warm on Saturday. Pigs were out in force in the morning. But, they showed very late on Saturday evening. Sunday, hangover day, was overcast and scattered showers. Perfect.

Well, I guess Rancho wanted me to cache it there for you guys, but he wasn't specific enough... so on Sunday night after everybody else left, I sat in camp and drank it.

Sorry 'bout that. It IS much easier on the head than that brown liquor you're so fond of.

My name is Jack. I signed up with the site a few years ago. I hadn't signed in for a while and found I couldn't log in anymore. Not sure it was due to lack of use or when the site changed from JHP to JHO. I was JRifenbark. I met some of you during the April 2002 hunt on the South Side of Tejon. Long story short I signed up again as The Savage Rabbit.

I hunted with my family this past weekend on the North Side. I killed a sow which weighed in at 196 pounds dressed out. The guys at the North Gate opined that it would have taken Big Pig had I not trimmed so much meat from her when field dressing. In my defense, I couldn't see inside and wanted to get her back to camp and skinned post haste. That and I didn't slap down the $10 to enter the contest.

She weighed 140 at the butcher in Simi Valley to whom we were graciously referred by the husband of the woman who was in the lead as of 12:00 pm on Sunday when we left. Her pig weighed 197. Live and learn.

Long story short, after a missfire, it took four rounds from my Springfield M1A Scout Rifle with a five round magazine to bring her down on the move. It ended with a charge and a shot to the lower neck that pierced the heart and the bullet was retrieved from the abdomen three feet from the entrance wound. Ok. She got up again and it took another shot to the neck that broke the off shoulder to keep her down ... after a third shot to the neck to keep her down. HER tusks were about 1" long. All of the guys at the North Gate thought it was a big boar. She was pregnant with an excessive amount of fat on her. She may have been about 3 or 4 years old according to one employee at the North Gate.

We went 3 for 6. My uncle took a 130 pound sow dressed out. My cousin killed at 33 pound monster with a 45-70. While we had a lot of fun at his expense, he gets to put his pig on the grill whole stuffed with fruit.

The Rifenbarks (and an associated Morris) had a great time and met a lot of great people. I am very happy to be back on Jesse's.

Tschuss,

The Savage Rabbit

Welcome back, Mr Savage!

That's a GREAT story with the M1A socom! I just picked up a regular M1A... was thinking about throwing a lighter synthetic stock on it and taking it hunting too. What type of sight system do you use? Scoped? Peeped?

What type of misfire? Were you using handloads or factory ammo? Did you allow the bolt face to drag the round from the magazine and slam shut, or did you "ease" the round into the chamber? Just curious.

Jesse,

In my haste last night I neglected to mention the other (likely) possibility that, when I checked to make sure the chamber was loaded while in the field, the bolt did not close all of the way.

Because I was using 150 grain Remington Ultra-Core Lokt it was probably was my fault. However, after I pulled the trigger and only heard "click" and was then left with a tougher shot than I planned for, I wasn't in the mood to blame myself. Also, after the action I was too tired to go back and look for the round to see if the primer was marked at all and might not have found it in the tall grass anyway.

My M1A Scout has an 18 or 18 1/2 inch barrel with peep sights and a black synthetic stock. Someday I may put a low power scout scope on the forward picitinny rail. The stock material is actually pretty slippery and the minimal, shallow checkering on the pistol grip and forend don't help much. I found that if I rubbed a stock of wild grain from the middle evelevation at Tejon where the stalks are green the resin afforded a great purcahse on the rifle.

I wrote in asking about what everyone thought about using an M1A with a 5 round mag for hunting in 2002 or 2004 and everyone concurred that, although some would look askance at the use of a military rifle for hunting, logically there is no diference between it and other semi auto rifles. No one had a bad word to say about when they saw it on the ranch. If you are thinking about getting a synthetic stock you might want to consider a camo stock in Mossy Oak or something similar to make it look a bit more sporting.

I'm trying to post a picture with this. We'll see if it works. [attachment=30222:attachment][attachment=30223:attachment]

Thanks for the Pic. Hell, the only difference between a military rifle and a hunting rifle is looks... a .308 is a .308, a 30-06 is a 30-06.

This last time at Tejon I brought my Mini14 .223 in case I got the urge to push through some of those REALLY thick bedding areas. I had the urge, but didn't get a shot. I was using 55gr JSP's moving 3200+fps. Under 50 yards I can put those bullets into a quarter every time. IT'd sure turn a Hog's brains inside out... I ended up using my 300wsm with a 180gr Winchester Supreme Bonded-core-Balistic-tip at 168 yards. Did a number on that Hog... let me tell you!
