Anyone know what this spring's acorn crop is going to look like in Central California? I've only received one report (from a guide) and it didn't sound promising. Any other reports out there? I guess it doesn't matter, because I'm still going on my annual turkey/hog hunt. We kill hogs in good years and bad years.

Well the acorn crop comes in the late summer and I personally feel most of it depends on the spring rains. A lot of late spring rains knocks off all the pollen and stuff that makes acorns when they are trying to develop. Different species of Oak develop at different times which is why some species have good years while others don't. Either way, this years acorn crop won't affect anything until September or so anyway. As far as the report from the guide you got, it seems a little premature to me but I'm not claiming to be an acorn expert either. What was his reason for the outlook not being good?
reds and blacks produce every 2 yrs on average whites are every yr how wet it is matters on how well the trees will grow and how big the acorns will be depending on type of oak you have around i think all three but stress is the biggie stressed trees produce bumper crops and nill the next few yrs normaly ....hope that tidbit helps
The guide is a friend of a friend, so there may have been some miscommunication. Our annual trip is in spring, so it looks like it's a non-issue for us. Maybe I should stick to waterfowl, where I actually know something. Thanks for the information.

Hey, you don't know until you ask. I was just curious as to why the guide didn't think the acorns were going to be good this year. Thought I might learn something myself.
If the oaks don't get enough rain in rainy season here they can drop all their flowers and acorns from stress/heat.Survival tactics.We are down by half at least on the totals.It doesn't ever really rain after May here.And it doesn't start til Oct. usually. You'll see pigs rooting for them.
