I purchased some Tilapia fillet's from my local market the other night and was quite impressed with the taste and texture. These are a freshwater fish, right?

I live in San Diego, and am wondering where I can catch these fish, and of course what methods and baits to use. I wouldn't mind driving and hour or two if need be.

Any info would be great! Thanks!

Jesse.

Yes, Oz. Tilapia (talapia) is a warmwater/freshwater fish (family: chichlids, chichlidae).
You can fish for them in the Salton Sea and the All American Canal.
What you purchased from the store was pond-raised.

That depends on what tingles your tongue. As DKScott pointed out above, the farm fish are certainly "cleaner" than the Sea or canal fish.

A few years back, I was visiting back east and the craze was for Tilapia fish wraps. They thought it to be an exotic fish. Nothing special. Just garlic seasoned, grilled, and wrapped in a tortilla with lettuce, tomato, and spices.

Tilapia feed on algae and plant matter. I don't think yopu can catch them on a hook. The only way I have seen them caught is with cast nets. They are the same fish that the fishermen in the new testament caught in the Sea of Galilee

First time I heard of them when I was at a class in Garden City Kansas 5years ago. They raise them localy in warm water from a local industry I see them advertized everywhere now even on the East coast . Been wanting to try some but your the first unbiased opinion I have heard will have to try some now!

We used to catch a lot of Tilapia on the Salton Sea. We also used small Tilapia as bait for Corbina. Unfortunately the Salton Sea is just about dead now. No fresh water is going into the Sea and apparently they are just letting it die. It used to be a great place to fish for Tilapia and Corbina. There is some talk about reducing the size significantly and rejuvenating a very small portion of it.

It's a real shame the way California "Manages" it's resources. I hope they do revive it... I love Corvina too!!!
