What do y'all think - .270 wsm or .300 wsm?

Why?

Which one has better selection/price on ammo?

As always, Thanks a million!

Either has more than enought power for hogs.If loading your own, the 30 cal. has a better bullet selection available. Tough choice good luck.

Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. See Avatar. This gun is dead on accurate and as reliable as Santa on Christmas eve. Reeds Ammo and Research loads a 158 grain Hornady XTP hollow point in .35 Rem that will knock a big boar sideways. But a .270 is a good choice too.

If you are going to choose between the 270 and 300 wsm's, I'd go with the 300.

No hog will ever know the difference between the two. What else are you going to hunt with the gun. Elk? Then side with the .300 wsm. Only deer and hogs? The .270wsm will do just fine and shoot maybe a hair flatter.

The .270wsm will kick just a bit less. Ammo for the two are about the same when considering price, selection and availabilty.

It just comes down to wheter you think you will need/want the larger caliber.

So far, I only hunt deer and hogs.

I DID go elk hunting in october - but it was Archery. If I go next year it'll be Archery also. But hey, you never know... I could possibly want to do a late season rifle hunt for elk in the next 2 or 3 years.

How do these two WSM rounds compare to each other at longer ranges... 300, 350, 400?

To be honest, I also don't really understand how the WSM compare to their original rounds...

Thanks guys!

You only offered the two choices, so of them I'd side with the .300 for the reasons SD mentioned (elk or other large animals). Both choices are great for deer and hogs.

Ammo for the WSMs is fairly available, and even more available if you load your own (a great option until the short-mag race levels off and we see who is gonna stay around and who is gonna become obsolete). The .270wsm and .300wsm aren't that far apart in price or availability right now.

As it is, I'm still pretty happy with my -06 for all my big game hunting, but if I were shopping to add something to my safe right now, I'd probably be leaning toward that .325. It just seems to be the right combination of characteristics to make it a great round for a long time to come... but then, I plan to do a lot more elk hunting over the years. I don't think I'd choose it primarily for deer.

Good luck!

I suppose I should've posted the reason I am choosing between .270wsm and 300wsm...

I have WANTED (not NEEDED) a new hunting rifle for almost a year now. I currently own a BEAUTIFUL Weatherby 300WinMag (not WSM), AND an old sportorized springfield 1903-A3 in 30-06 of course. They weigh in at 8lbs and 9lbs respectively.

Honestly, I beat the cr@p out of my stuff. I put a scratch in the barrell of the .300 climbing through some rough terrain and almost cried. I don't like carry the 1903-a3 in the field either. So I had decided on buying some type of synthetic stock field gun chambered in .308 (Mil Surp) or maybe a 7mm or 300wm.

But I've found a sale on a Model 70 Classic Ultimate Shadow in only two choices 270wsm or 300wsm... for $479 (regular price $720).

That's the right price. And the right style. And I just can't pass up the deal. It's worth it. So that's why I've gotta pick tween 270wsm and 300wsm, and kinda fast, and thus the post.

Please continue to post the other options cause I always enjoy a "high caliber" debate... but make sure to vote on the 270wsm vs 300wsm.

Thanks a million!

Oz, if you already have a 300mag, i'd get the 270 wsm....a bit lighter & you could use it as your mountain rifle.
That's a hellofa price

I think the 270 will compliment the '06 & 300.

Sorry about the Marlin flag waving.

Go with the .270 all the way.

Well, the weekend has past, and I've made a purchase.

In 10 days I will be the proud owner of a brand spankin new Model 70 Classic Shadow Supreme chambered in...... 300 WSM!

Thank you all VERY much for posting opinions, and voting on the poll (My first poll).

Yes, the 300 is "more gun than needed" - but if I move to another state and want to rifle hunt elk, I can use heavier loads than the .270, and it's true there are about twice as many factory ammo choices available for the 300. Nonetheless, it was a difficult choice, because both really are quite similar!

My sincere thanks,

Jesse

Winchester Model 70 in .270 WSM $410
Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 $560
150 Winchester powerpoints 27.00 box
Rolling 100 lb pigs at 100 yards 3x3 buck at 160 and pokeing 4" groups into Bin Ladens forehead at 300 yards......Priceless

I love the .270WSM flat shooting hard hitting but could load down to 130gr or 110gr for smaller game and the light weight action/syn.stock makes for an easy carry up to the top of the next g*& D%^& F*@(%^*& Hill top.
