Well just got home from my hunt. It was a very different elk hunt than I have ever had. Saw big bulle every day but there were just too many eyes to sneek up on. Got to withen 30 yards of a great 7x7 with no broken tines but when he stood up all that was above the sage was his neck on up with no shot opp. Well on saturday the second to last day we spotted a set of tracks leading into the mountains which looked more like chucker mountains than elk but there ended up being quite a few elk on these hills which were also full of chucker. Well my dad spotted a bull and the stock was on. A hour and a half later I was withen 25 yards when the bull stood with a quarter away shot. Well my shot was a little off and I hit him right in the shoulder

no penatration at all. Well we tracked him till dark on tracks alone and marked where he last was. The next morning after the 2 hour hike back in to where he was my dad spotted him again. Well one more shot and it was done I got my first elk a 5x4 all beat up. Not a tine on him was unbrocken but I was sure happy with him being my first elk and all and comming on the last day. I'll post pic's later

Brut, Congrats on the bull. A Ca elk is a trophy no matter how you look at it. Now you need to get that bull measured and entered into the CBH records program! Let me know if you are interested and I take care of the rest. If you are not a CBH member, you will get a free membership with your first entry. Congrats again. Ed F

Nash, Nice bull. Congradulations. Where ya from? CBH has set the minimum for Tule elk at 150" right now. Our minimum is low because we want to get as many elk as we can right now into the records program. The way we are looking at it is, any Ca archery elk is a once in a lifetime elk and should be recognized. Second, is that B&C just recognized Tule elk as a separate species catagory and P&Y is looking at doing the same thing, based on the number of Tule elk that are taken by bowhunters. Congradulations to you two guys. If you are interested, contact me and I will get some measurers to you. Ed F

I bet it was quite the thrill.

Is that hunt east or west of the 395. I see lots of sign on the west side in all the brush and into the mountains.

Congrats on a job well done,
I have put in for this tag and look forward to being drawn someday... Any elk with a bow is a feat to be proud of.

Congrats!!! Should be eating well!!!

???? What is the difference between a "Tule Elk" and an "Elk???" If the picture us justifying, and that is a "Tule Elk," they seem a bit smaller?? What are average wt.'s on comparison with the more common "elk???"

This guy was probably 5-600 lbs. They are a bit smaller. The fish and game people called them Valley Pigs. This herd grazes with cattle and drinks out of sprinklers. Though, they still know that magical 100 yard barrier and how to maintain it. Very skillfully. I have some neat scouting pics I would like to post but the camera is 6.8 MP and the pics are about 3.5 megs each. Too big for here. I got one of a nice herd Bull Bugling with sage brush in his rack.
