Thanks all for the great info , I will use it. I am really looking forward to this hunt , the east side is some of my old stomping grounds when I was a kid and still is when I can get drawn for an X zone. And yep Hank, I did get you tag, I got your name scratched off nice and clean like, they'll never know.

Again thanks !

Mr Big

Hi you guys. I have been hearing all of this talk about Mark John's alfalfa fields. I refer to them as Tinnemaha west and east. Bowhntr took his elk in the west field in '05. Fish and Game closed that field to hunting two years ago. Read the boundary description in the regulations. Mark John is one of the nicest people you will meet. He also wants you to kill all of the elk from his fields and will give you permission to hunt both fields. Just view all of the elk in the west field and only hunt on the west side of Fish Springs road. I do not want you to get in trouble with the wardens in the area. Good Luck!!!!

Well , I arrived late Thursday night to meet SteveK who already had his trailer and camp set up. We spent all day Friday scouting, getting the lay of the land and talking with some of the locals. Let me say , those folks over there are the best. Friendly, generous, helpful and just all around descent people. We also met up with several tag holders all of whom shared plans and spots where they would be for the opener.

The Saturday opener was good. I don't think that anyone was crowded out by another hunter. The place was crawling with quail hunters though ;)
We set up on the west side of some private ground near one of routes ( but not the only route) that the animals would take out of the area each day . As it happened , they headed south towards another guy. He , Roy, was camped near us at the Tinemaha Campground. About 1-1/2 hours after fist light we heard a shot from his direction . He had scored on a nice mature cow.

All through the trip we kept running into a guy named Warren and his wife who live in Bishop. His wife had drawn a bull tag. We kept sharing notes each time that we ran into eachother. What a good dude and dude-ette . They had hunted some ground north of us for the opener and she missed a good 7x7 bull and was pretty distraught. They later took the rifle out and it wasnt even on the paper so they grabbed another rifle from home for the next day's hunt.
Steve and I did some more spotting and scouting Saturday and by nightfall had a plan for the morning. We would hunt near to the north herd.

I had already walked into a good vantage point by the time light broke over the mountains. It didnt take long to see that the animals had been pushed beyond anything within sight of my binocs. Just after arriving back at my truck I ran into Warren and his wife once again. They said that there was about twelve cows in an area that I had found six bulls the evening before. It was about 8 miles so south so off we went with another local guy , Braden in a lead vehicle.
As we rode by the site of the prior days hunt we could see that herd moving south. I figured that we would try to get a quick set-up on those animals first knowing that if it were not succesful that we still had those 12 other cows to put the stalk on.
When we got south of that main herd I saw the truck of a Father Daughter hunting team parked near-by. Not wanting to infringe upon their hunt I hopped out of my truck with my rifle and asked Steve "to go for a drive". He went back to camp. As I sprinted past the Father Daughter I told them that the herd was on their way. I trucked up a ravine in a direction that I thought the herd would go if/when they were shot at by the others. ( Later , Braden said " Man You Are One Heck of A Mountain Goat Brett !!" )
I wasnt there long when I heard Father and Daughter shoot. I was still out of breath from the sprint when I saw two pairs of Bull horns cresting the ridge right in front of me . I got them to turn when they got within 15 feet of me. Im sure they would have ran over the top of me had I not spooked them. The whole herd was doing just what critters do after being shot at, they were TRUCKIN and now out at 40-50 yds. I picked out a good cow with no other animals behind her and put my crosshairs just behind the shoulder and squeezed one off. I later found that the shot was a little too far forward, it went through some front shoulder muscle and rib cage. She didnt go down but she was limping in the front end. The herd turnded towards a saddle in the adjoining ridge . The cow seemed to recover from the limp and I lost her in the group. I would not shoot not knowing which one might have been hit. I was getting pretty bummed and the herd began to file over the saddle. Then I saw one break off of the main group and it was limping. She slowed and went broadside. While I was watcing them go away I had extended my rifle mounted bi-pod in preparation for a shot. I had my chance now. I had already ejected my spent round and chambered a new one so I tried to squeeze on one . The Safety Is On ! Click , Off goes the safety and I squeeze once again. She drops like a rock. I later used my rangfinder and found it to have been a 252 Yd. final kill shot.
After a short drive from a nearby maintennence road Braden and Steve helped me to load her up and we headed for camp.

After cleaning her up I went up to Bishop to hang her in the cooler. The meat shop was closed so I packed the truck, stuffed her cavity with ice and headed north for Trinity County by about 2:30 PM. I still held a B zone and bear tag. Also I wanted to try out the new meat locker I built at the cabin there. It was a 10 hour drive.

All in all it was a great trip and the meat locker worked fine.

Thanks to all for your input into this hunt . I used it all . Again , Thanks !

Some pics

The first is a view from the place we set up on the first morning. You can see my truck in the far distance. We walked from it before daylight.

The second is of the cow and myself. Not a great pic but hey... what can I say ; )

Brett.

Great job, that first picture of where you set up is exactly the view my father and I had on our trip.

Thanks for the call back, I was deep in face painting at Bass Pro Shops with daughter when you called. Good save on that cow, luckily she separated from the herd, they all look the same without the antlers!

Did you see any chukar or quail during scouting?

I'm putting in for the bull tag next year in that new zone we talked about.

Hey Chuckarboy. Yunno, after getting her all skinned out I figured that the first shot would have probably done her in, with some patience on my part. She was probably getting ready to lay down before I took the second shot. I just didnt want to chance it.

I saw a couple coveys of quail near the road to the campground but no Chuckar.

Hey , good call on next years Bull draw. Not a bad idea at all !

Thanks for A L L of the advice !
