Shoot 'em with what ya got. Shoot what you're comfortable with. Choose the right gun for the right circumstances.

When I was crawling through bedding areas I grabbed my Ruger Mini14 with a 5round magazine full of soft-tip .223's and equiped williams peep sight and a nice fat tritium front blade. It's all about quick acquisition, and repeat shots with a nice short barrel when you're punching your way through tight brush. Next time I'lll probably carry my 12ga Coachgun with a 3" slug in the first chamber and 000 buck in the second... just for fun.

When I was driving through the hills with 300 to 600 yard vistas, it was the 300WSM with bi-pod and 4.5-16 scope.

When I was in-between areas I hunted with my 45-70 single shot buffalo gun. Just for the Hell of it.

But spec has hit the nail on the head (as usual). For NEW hunters send them to a bigger, faster, round like a 30-06. It provides a little more room for error (although not much). If they can't shoot the '06, 270 is just fine.

Just be careful of the regs in the area you hunt Jesse. This is from CA DFG site on legal methods of take.

I have seen how tough they can be if you don't take out the vitals cleanly. They can be pretty darn stubborn given the chance!
