Hey Speck..
You forgot the cowboy hat...............you know, to shoot, at the end of the hunt ,when you've been skunked.

Swiss Army Knife. Worthless for the blade but valuable for all the other gadgets on it.

BadCo....

Man, even the danged cowboy hat skunked me on that trip! How many shots? Three? You had to break down and smack it with bird shot! I still had a blast, though...

But then again...

I don't intend to get skunked at Tejon!

Karstic,

I am still offering the driving lessons, but the price might have to go up. My insurance agent saw the pictures from last year and, well... now they wanna raise the premiums on my car insurance AND my life insurance.

And Steve,

We ARE NUTS for what we go through to chase critters. But we'd be even MORE nuts if we ever stopped.

Take care of those stitches, 'cause I'm gonna need some help dragging my big ol' boar at Chopper's next month.

Russman! Good to see a post from ya buddie... I have a feeling there is a big tusker in your near future, from what everybody says you have earned a big'un.

As for training, this time of year nothing beats shed hunting to work the old legs. So, when I'm not chasing the kids around, I'm out looking for headgear.

One strategy piece that may help if you're hunting with more than one person - like most critters, the pigs are most active at first/last light. If you happen to shoot one during one of those times, field dress it by yourself and let the other guy(s) in your party keep hunting during those prime hours. Once it's past 9am or dark at night, then enlist their help to get the pork back to the truck. No sense in wasting good hunting time.
Very good advice! Also mentioned was the GPS dont leave home without it and a compass... All my Tejon spots are marked!

Great post Speck...
<

Bike riding and walks with a weighted pack (20-40lbs) seemed to help...lots of range time and dry firing..(make sure its unloaded) to tone up the rifle skills... but then again I'm just getting over the soreness from last weekend

so what do I know

Hello Fellow hunters,
I work with Russman66 and will be joining you at tejon in may. Russ has shared alot of stories and this website with me. This will be my first pig hunt. I usually hunt dove, quail and rabbit. I'm preparing for the hunt by going to the gym and walking 3.5 miles and hour at a 4% incline on the tread mill for a half hour. I plan to work that up to 4-5 miles an hour at a 5% incline for 1 hour by hunt date.

I look forward to seeing some of the faces of the people that Russ has been telling me about. He has nothing but high praises for you guys.

Welcome Bearmage,

I hunted with Russman last year and we had a great time, and so will you.

The things he told you about Tejon Ranch it's all true, the place is awesome. Whatever he said about us... don't believe a word of it... it's lies, all lies!

Hey Bear, That "Cardio" Stress you're puttin' yourself thru, will probably serve you well! But don't forget to work the "Upper Body" a little too... cause you're gonna have to tote and lift that sucker' too, when you "Score"! And you KNOW you're gonna' be successful...RIGHT? :) Lookin' forward to meetin' ya'

songdog is right on with his pack. I carry about the same. I jog 2 miles/day 4 times/week. I also lift weights 4 times/week 1 hour/day. I still don't know if that is enough for some of those nasty hills at Tejon. I have never been there, but it looks nasty from the road!

First time seeing this post. I just got done eating my spicy chicken sandwich from Carl's. Does that count?

I started a new training regimen 8 days ago. It's pretty tough though the average bear cant make it through but it only involves moving a small grain sized stone about 2 feet.

You start with the stone in either your left or right kidney it doesn't matter which one really. Then you just push it on out!
Ive been 8 days two ambulance rides, a 10hr. non stop "marathon" and countless lessre 4-6 hr "mini" pushes and I still hven't completed the exercise.
Now I gotta have someone take my place on a hunt with my boys cuz I'm just to darned dedicated to completing this exercise. I'll let you know how long it takes. I've pushed it right through the Salmon opener and now I'm missing Choppers but I should be in great shape come fall bear season! Boys reported lots of hogs and turkeys yesterday but no shots taken.

Wow franklin!!!!! My wife haxs also just started this exercise plan on tuesday. She has been working out everyday since then and still has not completed the training. I think she has taken it to the next step though: pass the pebble, chase a three year old, and breastfeed and care for a 4 month old. I think she is my hero!!!!
