I know most of you California folks hunt for your hogs whereas many of us Texans trap ours. Still, I thought I would share with you a couple from this weekend.

It rained quite a bit this weekend ... and I had a mature boar in one trap.

I also trapped this sow. Of course it was in the back trap in the wettest area.

Nice work trapping RLL!!! Here is a pic of one of my portable traps. I just build them for ranchers with pig problems in trade for access.

PWA -- nice trap. That'll work. I find all trappers have their personal preferences. You used hog wire for the side panels. I have gone away from that because piglets crawl out of the 6*8 openings. I used that in the panel trap (pic with the boar) and later welded lateral wire on the lower 6*8 openings to stop that. I only use 4*4 utility panels now which is what the trap with the sow is made from. Your trap looks light enough to be very portable. From the top pic, I couldn't tell you had run your guillotine gate channel up past the trap ... which would cause it to stick and not drop ... but your bottom pic shows you did. Overalll, I like your trap. I didn't think you guys in CA trapped much.

BTW, what is the extra brace in the back for? Looks like wire runs over it. I suspect it is a trip device of some kind, but can't tell for sure. Kind of looks like a bump bar.

Clear up one other thing for me. You state you build them for ranchers in exchange for access. Do you mean you "give" them to the ranchers? Wow. Here in Texas, we place them on the property but we run them and when we leave, take them with us.

RLL,
That brace part is for a portable dolly you can take on and off from trailer to where you set your trap. And Yes I give them to legit ranchers whom have depradation permits and let me bow hunt. The trap you see I trade to a guy for some taxidermy work. Its fun building these things. Ive never had a problem from some of the users who have my traps as far as piglets getting out they would have to climb to the top openings to get out. Yeah its hard to get on private ranch here in california the mighty green back talks. You have tons of people here competing for public lands so that means heavy pressure. The hogs get even more nocturnal.
When I was station at Ft hood,tx for 4 years in the late 1978 to 1981. use to take a few hogs on the fort. I bet its full of hogs now. Got a brother that live in the south east part of Austin,tx, But doesnt hunt at all. I'd like to make back there to bowhunt hogs some day.

Wow. I have never considered giving away traps. I trap so many hogs it is a hassle giving away the meat. But giving away the trap? Interesting. I regularly turn down requests to trap nuisance hogs here. Since I now trap close to my home, I turn down requests to trap 30, 50 or even 100 miles away.

There is no comparison between hog hunting 25 years ago and today. Back then, they were more of a rarity. Today, they are everywhere ... kinda like fireants. Most estimates are that there are 2 mill+ in Texas. BTW, CA has the second highest population, estimated around 500K. The hill country (Austin area) has lots of them. The Killeen area (Ft. Hood) has lots of them too. I would wager that Ft. Hood is thick with them. Heck, I live in the Houston suburbs ... and I've trapped 30+ this year. My traps are only 3 miles from my home. Most people (non-hunters) are clueless they are here ... but they are.

RLL NO PM .[/b]
Hmmm. Well, I actually sent a JHO email. When I try to send a PM, it says I am not "allowed to use this feature". No clue as to why.

Oh well. Here is what I wrote you. (for the readers, I apologize. I tried to get him this info in an email so as not to clutter up the board).

You are welcome to join me. Normally, I set the traps on Wed ... check and re-bait them on Friday ... check them on Sunday. I have meetings on Friday this week, so I plan to bait and set them on Thurs ... and check them on Sunday. Usually between 8am and 9am ... but I can be flexible. You are welcome to join me. Heck, I'll even give you some Wild Boar Summer Sausage, Wild Boar Tamales and Wild Boar Canadian Bacon that I make.

Can't guarantee we'll have hogs ... but the worst is you will have a morning walk in the woods that has lots of hogs in the area. The traps are in Katy, which is a suburb of Houston (on I-10) on the west side. Let me know and I'll give you my contact info. Thanks ... RL

To whomever it may concern,
The PM feature in this JHO website was removed around 2-3 years ago. Some of the e-mails of the people who post in here also do not work. I tried to e-mail a reply to "dirtpoor" around 2 months ago and it would not go through. So "dirtpoor" I tried to answer your question regarding restoration of my hearing and fasting but your e-mail does not accept. Sorry to hijack this thread. To continue with the story, I used to hunt in Thompsons, a small city 6 miles from the Houston city limits and there were herds of hogs that would come into the corn bait at night and we were allowed to shoot firearms there(back in 2003). Texas is crawling with hogs. 'Nuff said.

So guys................whats the word? Was it a success? Did you get anymore pigs in those traps? If you got any pics, please post them, I just love seeing the bacon all pissed off like that in the traps.

Frosty

PS. Thinking of making my own traps on the properties I have access to. Could you send me some info on how you make yours with regards to trip door mechanisms that work best for you. Thanks in advance for any info you can help me with.

Surf -- met with XD. Took him with me to check the traps. Beautiful walk in the woods ... but alas no pigs. Still, a pleasant walk with a nice guy.

Yeah, I'll be glad to send you the plans. It will be next week. I'm doing my civic duty and serving on a jury this week.
