It's a large cage...about 4x4x3 with a one way door when the hog walks in to "take the bait" he trips the door catch and the door closes and your hog is caught. Traps MUST be checked daily at the minimum. Bait the traps with some sour corn and place the trap in a well "rooted" area. The trap needs to made of some REALLY strong fencing with a top, bottom and three fixed sides with the forth being the door. You can either eat the hog yourself or you can sell the hogs to "hunting ranches".
A lot of folks just shoot 'em in the cage. But that's not usually for sport hunting, but for pest control. I think it would be exciting just to jump in with them, rassle 'em to the ground, and bite their throats. But only if there are at least three angry boars and a big, ticked-off sow in the cage.
Like Kick said, make sure you check your local regs. In CA you have to have a depredation permit to trap hogs. Other states have differing rules and regs.
Desposing of the Hog is a whole other story. You can Shoot it if you are going to eat it. OR if you plan on selling it normally you have a cage in the back of your truck with a ramp. Set the truck up so the two cages are facing door to door with your ramp going up to the cage in the back of the truck. Then place some boards or fence panels on the sides connecting the two cages together then open the doors and run him up the cage in the truck and close the door. CHECK YOUR LOCAL REG's. Hog's can be hunted year round in Texas and even spot lighted at night. They are real pest's when it comes to tearing up a farmers crop.
I guess you could call me the crazy one that traps hogs. I trap them all year long and when caught, load them in a trailer and take them to a buying station that pays for the hogs. You are not going to get rich trapping them, but it sure is fun. My traps are 4' wide, 8' long and 5' tall. I have a top on them so the hogs don't jump out, but there is no bottom (it is easier to get the hogs to go in with a natural floor). I put a steel post at each corner and stake the trap down so the hogs don't flip it when caught. I can't post any pics because I don't have a scanner, but look at texasboars.com and there are some pictures of traps there.
I also trap hogs in texas year round, I use the falling door trap and a trap that has a door that other hogs can keep coming in but does not let the hogs out. We have so many hogs on our place that I shoot the hogs in the traps or if they are small enough you can just go in and pull them out by their back legs. I know plenty of guys who grab their back legs them stab them in the heart. Sounds pretty crazy but very common in Texas especialy if you are hunting them with dogs. We have packs of hogs on our ranch that run in numbers of 30's and 40's. Needless to say me and all my friends have freezers full of sausage. I have got a few pics of one of my traps on webshhots. Look at pic deer9 and deer13 under the deer pics and at Javelina1 under the hogs pics. Ive never caught a deer in them even though the picture looks like im about to. I keep them tied up and a windfeeder going when im not there.
I am really interested in this subject and it does sound exciting!
What is the best kinda trap door..I've been told the swinging type that allows hogs to continue to come in are not the best because they learn to hold the door open and let the ones caught get out..is this true??
Based on my other trapping experience, I am afraid of shooting them in the trap because of the likelihood of it spoiling the trapping site. It seems plausible that it would keep other hogs away to an extent.
