I spoke to Chopper last night & sent my deposit this morning. My GF & I will be there. She has not yet killed a big game animal w/ her bow, but has managed to put the smack down on a couple rabbits with it. Can't wait to go. This is both of our first hog hunt.

sweet welcome aboard

Okay guys, clue me in on some of the details here. Do you all hike out from the cabins, or drive? If you drive do you need 4x4 or a quad? Also, I'm bringing my tripod & 12x binos, is there good spot & stalk country or do you sit blinds, still-hunt, or whatever? Thanks.

no quads!
drive from cabin to your area 4wd is perfered just to get on to the ranch (steep driveway).
at that point it is still hunt or spot and stalk unless you bring your own popup blind

Dang! My blazer's broke down & only get's like 8 mpg when it's up. Do you think a Nissan Rogue would make it? It's got a fair amount of clearance. I think it my have AWD when it needs it too. Not sure, it's one of those new cross-over things.

I've had my 2WD Nissan Frontier (Desert Runner package so it's got a little higher clearance and limited slip diff) up there twice with no problems at all. There are definitely some roads on the ranch I wouldn't chance with it, but I've always felt I was better off walking them anyway and still hunting along the way. I think Chopper prefers 4WDs for the sake of his roads, but I certainly didn't have any trouble getting around.

I keep a Hi-lift with an extraction kit in my truck for insurance, but I'm sure if I had gotten stuck I could have bribed one of the guys with the big beefy full-sizers to drag me back on to the road.

And like I said, I always saw hogs when I was on foot, not driving around from place to place.

Good luck to all of you! Wish I was going with you.

I've been to Choppers many times in a Pontiac Grand Prix (4-door sedan, front wheel drive)....but like Cecil said, watch out for the pine cones. It's a long wait for a tow truck up there.

That's cool, I was hoping it would be an 'on-foot' hunt, but didn't have any idea about the terrain or even the size of his place. I don't even own a quad - personnally I hate those things. My off-highway vehicle is a REI Mars back-pack sittin over a pair of Montrail boots.

p.s. Put me & the GF on your roll-call (Matt Stevens & Ingrid Osses)

I've been day-dreaming about a hog-hunt ever since our deer season ended here in January. So while sitting at my desk just now, drifting-off again, it suddenly occured to me that I've never been on a group hunt before. In short, since I'm about four weeks away from meeting with a group of strangers, all of whom are armed & looking to kill something, it might be smart to issue a brief disclaimer for my own safety:

I've worked in machine shops since I was sixteen & am now thirty, which meanst that my sense of humor & language lean just a little towards the coarse side. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or piss anyone off, so if you find jokes about any of the following topics offensive, please let me know so that I can stay out of your way:

ethnicity
religion
political party affiliation
financial status
sexual orientation
beastiality
beer preference
truck preference
obessity
anorexia

I'm gettin excited to go. Actually, gettin isn't the right word, I passed excited the minute I sent my deposit.

The pot-luck stuff sounds cool, are you going to post what everyone's bringing so we don't end up w/ 20lbs of potato salad & no chips? Or do we just wait & see.
