Trespass fee hunt

I know of many guided hunts in and along the central coast area but would like to know if anyone here knows of or offers access to a ranch that accepts self guided hunts in either San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara or Monetery Counties. Done the public property thing without success. I prefere better odds. Thanks in advance.

You might try a doing a search for Williamson Brothers. There were two or three discussions on this list about their operation near Coalinga. They might have what you're looking for.

Of course, there's also the Tejon Pig O Ramas. I'll be talking to Barbara at Tejon Ranch next week, and will ask about setting up a JHP Pig Hunt in the near future. More on that as it happens.

In the meantime, if you uncover more of these, please post them. I know they must be out there, but the majority of what you hear about is guide services.

Thare is a ranch in Parkfield, that for a fee will let you hunt their property. I think It's called the Charlemane Ranch. I never had any luck there however their are hogs on the property. If I can find out the name for sure I'll add it here later.

The ranch that Hawghunter is talking about is owned by Gloria and Martin Vanhorn. Hawghunter and I hunted it a few years back, although we didnt see any hogs. There was 2 other groups there and one guy nailed a small boar and the other group nailed a monster sow, so there are pigs on the property. They charge $290 for a complete weekend of hunting and that includes a bunkhouse with beds and a full kitchen. Its all self guided and you come and go as you please. Thanks for the info all.....I would like a phone number of the ranch, Hoghunter. When you two went, did you all drive, spot and stalk or walk, spot and stalk? Do you know how many acres one can hunt this way? I want a rifle hunt only. I really like the Parkfield area, but do know some areas of that region are more productive then others. I posted about a great ranch in this same area that is guided for $500, cabin extra. The price of this self-guided hunt sure sounds reasonable for a full weekend and bunkhouse. Did you share the bunk house with others or was it all yours? I'd even be happy camping in a tent. Thanks again.

Anyone else have any experience with Martin & Gloria's ranch? Been thinking about giving it a try, but I'm not sure I want to save $100 to get skunked. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Well, we hit the Chalome Creek Ranch last weekend getting up there on Friday afternoon. Arrived at the ranch and met Martin and Gloria (Really nice) and were directed to our bunk house. The bunk house is nothing to write home about, but it serves its purpose with a gas stove, refrig., microwave, shower and 8 bunks. Gloria gave us a overview/map of the property (Approx. 500 acres) and then we were off on our own. The area looks promising and we saw plenty of sign but nothing really fresh. We hiked the whole property the first day and still weren't exactly sure where the piggies were gonna be the next day. Set out during darkness and found a small rooted area/tracks in a valley, but no hogs...we checked the other end of the property and found a rooted area in the bottom of a valley between a bedding area and a watering hole. We set up for the afternoon and waited with dismal results. We headed out earlier Sunday morning with a discouraged hope of finding anything. We found plenty of fresh sign rooting/tracks/scat in a small valley surrounding the Martin Bros. property. It looked as if they were there the night before, but crossed over onto the other property during the night. The afternoon came and it was time to go. Figured we may have a chance in the last area if we could have hunted that evening or the following morning, but we were a lil too late for that. The only hogs we saw were the 3 that were taking up our space in the walk-in cooler (1 huge boar 300+ w/ 3" tusks and 2 nice meat hogs taken by a friend of Martin's at the Work Ranch on Saturday). All in all the ranch has potential and the price can't be beat if you get a hog. I just think the hogs were extremely nocturnal that weekend with the warm weather and they bed down in the surrounding properties. I hear this ranch is more successful in May-July and Oct-Dec.

Boy, that's too bad. If you spend another $10.00 you can hunt Tejon, on about 100,000 acres. No bunkhouse, but the camping is free.

The hunt was cheaper than usual as Gloria owed us a favor because of a booking error from awhile back. Believe me Bishop, our whole party was upset that we opted for the cheaper hunt rather than the POR this month. My father and I will probably be there for the June POR if we can wait that long. I think it will be the POR's for sure from now on, can't beat the abundance of property and the fun at camp.

It's a shame you didn't get them pigs. Sounds like it wasn't for lack of trying.

500 acres sounds AWFULLY small to have any real chance of getting pigs on though. I mean if there's ton in the area, I suppose decent success could be had, but ANY pressure would put them off a ranch that small. Heck, it seems like a car door slamming might put them clear off a ranch that small.

Any idea what their percentage of successful hunters is? How many days a month is the place hunted? It sure seems like if they are hunting that ranch more than one weekend month, it'd be awfully tough to keep them piggies around.

I guess it brings home what a good deal the POR is. Can't wait to do my first.

There's a ranch I hear about near Santa Barbara that charges around $150 for trespass. I'll have to give them a call after Tejon to see what the story is. I'll give everyone an update.

That reminds me. I have to post some pics I took of hogs I saw near Santa Barbara. Two sows, one right by the road and the other on a ranch with a piglet.

You can take the 101 to that 47 (I think if it's not 43), the one that takes you to Lost Hills off the 5 and go south. It's up on the grape vine near Lebec.

The highway that goes from 101 to Lost Hills is Highway 46.
