I have a Minolta Dimage 7i, 5 megapixel, 7x zoom. I bought it a few years ago to use in the blind and driving around. I am now seriously thinking about a new camera.

I have it narrowed down to the Nikon 8800 and the Panasonic FZ20.

Both have image stabilization.

The Nikon has a 10 x zoom (350 mm) the Panasonic has a 12 x zoom (430 mm)

the Nikon is 8 Megapixel, the Panasonic is 5 megapixel.

OK, when I get pictures of deer in the fields while driving around (big bucks) most of the pics I crop before sending and printing. My question is if I was at the same spot and took a pic of a big buck on the other side of the field with both cameras, then cropped the nikon so the pic is as close as the panasonic. Would it be as sharp as the panasonic ?

My minolta is 7x (200 mm) and a big buck cropped so you can see him gets very grainy.

this picture is from the Minolta and was cropped quite a bit.

If your going to do a lot of cropping I would go with the higher megapixel model.
