I drove up to Fort Hunter Liggett Wednesday for hunter orientation and to get my tag. The staff at FHL were very friendly and helpfull during the orientation and throughout the hunt. The only downside I can see to applying for an elk hunt at Hunter Liggett compared to the other options in the state is the weather. The weather Channel was predicting 95F for Jolon, CA so I was a little suprised as I drove through the front gate at 3pm and it was 108F! Opening day it was 110!!! Despite the weather, it was an awesome experience and a great hunt.
My hunting buddies and I saw quite a few bulls Wednesday evening driving the main roads throughout the base.
We woke up bright and early Thursday morning and headed to a spot along a creek that runs through the base. The bulls were bugling in the dark so we picked one out and headed that direction.
We had a few close calls Thursday morning but never got a shot at a shooter bull. We spent that afternoon in a different area trying to avoid the other hunters. Apparently we all had very similar plans that first morning!
We glassed up a few elk that afternoon but never got close to one I wanted to shoot.
Friday morning we started in the same place as the morning prior, we got in extra early to beat the other hunters to the spot we had picked out. I glassed up a solo bull bugling across an open field that appeared to be headed in roughly the same direction as a few bulls we saw opening morning. I made a circle down wind to try and intercept him.
Apparently I picked the right spot. About 45 minutes later I arrowed the bull at 11 yards! I never called once, he just walked into my lap and I wasn't about to interrupt his perfect plan.
He's a 6x7 and roughly scores 230 gross. There are bigger bulls on the base but I wasn't about to pass up a great opportunity at a great bull like this one. Enjoy.

Don't sell it short, that is a nice elk!!! Tough with the heat but that is when they rut, the hunts are spread all the way to the end of December. Just trying to squeeze them in with the base operations.

Nice Bull

Excellent job, you can be very proud of taking a bull elk on public land, especially with a bow...

Great looking bull and story to go with it.
11 yards, that's awesome. I hope to have a close encounter like that one day.
