I was pretty excited to hear the first gobble this year. On March 31st, I was in the driveway cleaning dried mud from my truck's wheel weels. At 3:15pm, I heard a gobble! I about took one of my ears off, trying to get out from under the truck. I couldn't see the Tom, so I tried yelping - nothing.
About a half hour later, I saw the Tom feeding in a neighbors field. I rushed inside to get my binoculars. He's the same Tom I've been watching for 2 years - he's HUGE! Then, I saw another Tom along the fence line. As I watched the 1st Tom feed towards the 2nd one, I noticed a flock of 7 hens in the adjoining field. They all joined up and headed for the woods, about 15 minutes later. The weather was sunny, with a slight North wind - about 70 degrees.
I was so excited (still am)! I haven't been able to hunt the Spring season for 2 years, because of health reasons. I've always enjoy watching them, but not being able to hunt them has been killing me....
The next day (April 1st), at about 4:45pm, they were all in the field again. This time, the wind was from the SW, with plenty of sunshine & high 60's.
I haven't seen them since. I'm guessing it's because of the colder & damp weather we've been having.
How's things looking in your neck of the woods?
