Shot - What surprises me was that you are actually in a flat ground?

After the Big Sur campground, I highly doubt whether there is a flat surface up there.

Sure there are lots of flat grounds up there, there just the size of a small bedroom.

Actually when your at the top of the mountain there are few camp grounds that are pretty flat, and have a great ocean view.

No one has mentioned this fun-filled, gift-that-keeps-on-giving aspect of the Ventana Wilderness... Poison Oak... I've been through a fair bit of that area (mostly on the coast half) and I haven't seen thicker PO anywhere else. As I get older I get it less and less, probably because I try to avoid it like the plague, but perhaps I've also had it so much I've built up a small resistance to it (honestly I have no clue).

Shot, do you get PO?

Also, congrats on those nice public land DIY hogs!!!

I'm willing to bet you're right.

Let's get you rolling through a thick patch of it to prove it to the naysayers.

you can get into the eastern side of Ventanna from FHL- take Nacimiento Furgusson Dr thru FHL over into the Indians/Las Padres Nat'l Forest (300,000 acres, some really good hunting in areas, not all poison oak and 1,000 foot cliffs). - check our website map at brysonresort.com -go to directions- you'll see we built a map that shows access into Ventanna from the eastern side- it's about 17 little miles from our resort. Happy Hunting- call if anybody has questions about that area I'm here right next door 805-472-2922 Deedy

Backcountry,

I have never gotten PO before, I really think I am immune to it (no joke). As a kid growing up in Switzerland that stuff was every where. My mom found me playing in it once, freaked out. Not only did I not get it but she ended up getting it by touching me.

Your right, there are places up there that are full of PO. I try to avoid it but if I see a hog I am going after it. My hunting buddy last year ending up getting PO from a hog I shot. He helped me quarter him out and ended up getting PO. Of course I was PO free, and to this day he gets on my case about that one trip ( I don't' think he will help out on my next pig

RL is right -wash with technu, also PO is a very clingy oil that stays on the hair of animals, you can get it from handling a hog thats been in poison oak just by touching it's hair (deer cattle etc.)

shot, be carful with the PO. I had a buddy I hunted with for about 5 years and he always claimed to be immune. I beleived him because he never got it, and I always would. Last year after a deer hunting trip to Los Padres NF he was covered in it. I dont think anyone is truly immune to that nasty stuff.

I thought you might find this interesting...
I had this construction project last year- we were running trenches for underground utilities in the poison oak, my guys all got it really bad- it's actually a workman's comp issue on jobsites. We all ended up at the Doctors getting those nice zone shots in the butt until we maxed out on those. It was really bad, I almost sold the place. The Doctors said that you never build up an immunity to it- recent studies have found that you actually accumulate it like people who are allergic to bee-stings. They said that if you are exposed to it over & over in a period of time it will accumulate within your system and you will just become more allergic to it. The myth of building a resistance was not true- they used to believe it too. At one point they used to try a poison oak pill that was made from poison oak- it turned out that most people just ended up with it in their intestines. They said that if you stay away from it for a few years you are less allergic because it's left your system. We finally got rid of the poison oak plants
<
- but that's a whole 'nother thread... my 2 cents (actually cost me several thousands of dollars). Oh yeah, it's at its worst when it's that lovely red color.
Shot- you coming to get a pig at FHL pres day?? I still need pix on the website and yours are pretty photogenic! You could hunt on the other side of the Ventana!
