I headed out to the ranch early this morning to scout for the upcoming deer rifle season and put up a few game cameras. Got there around 6:30 and it was already over 75 degrees and warming fast. Took a look at the rapidly dwindling lake and noticed that the mud all around the water line had been thoroughly worked over. I spent a couple hours walking around and on the quad (no deer at all...), then was heading back to park the quad by the lake and spotted a group of about a dozen hogs rooting around in the mud. About half were good sized sows, the other half juniors. Pulled my trusty "thuddy thuddy" with peep sights off of the quad and stalked to within about 50 yards of them. Picked a nice fat grey and black dry sow and dropped her. The group didn't immediately start to run, so I turned to another smaller sow and let her have one. She took off running with the rest of the herd, but I could see she was lagging behind and saw her stop about 75 yards away in some tall grass. Did a careful stalk in a circle around her till I had an open shot to finish her off.
Big one went 145, smaller one 110.
It's bone dry in the hills so water is probably a key to finding critters for the next few months. View attachment 82259
Now time to find some deer!
