Two more elk left to waste after shooting

Oregon State Police have discovered two more dead elk at the site of a poaching incident last week west of Yamhill, bringing to eight the number of Roosevelt elk shot and left mostly to waste.
Sgt. Brent Seaholm said troopers investigating the area on Weyerhaeuser property in the mountains near the Flying M Ranch found a five-by-six-point branch antlered bull and a cow elk that apparently were wounded but crawled several hundred yards from where the six original animals were shot.
One of the six also was a large bull missing its antlers. Only a few hindquarters were missing. The rest was left to rot.
Seaholm said the shooter or shooters either didn't know the other large bull escaped but died or didn't care.
It's the state's most serious Roosevelt elk-killing incident since three large bulls were shot in October 1995 in the popular Dean Creek Wildlife Area east of Reedsport.
Dead are four bulls -- the two large bulls and two spike-antlered bulls -- three cows and a bull calf.
"I think those elk were just caught in a bundle and milled around in confusion while they got shot," Seaholm said.
Troopers found 41 .300-caliber shell casings but won't say which of several .300 cartridge configurations was used.
The shooting occurred between Sept. 26 or 27 and Sunday, Seaholm said.
The 10,000-member Oregon Hunters Association, through its McMinnville Chapter, is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case.
