My hunting partner and I had a busy couple of weeks: two of our friends came out a week apart for some hog hunting and we managed to connect. We experienced a couple of difficulties; lots of wet sows to avoid/look over and, with our second hunt, the weather made a big mess out of it.

The first hog Steve had seen the night before and was back out the next evening. I got Josh to 135 yards and he plugged it with my .300 wm/168 gr. Barnes handload: DRT (I sure hate those Barnes) He gutted out at 111 lbs.

My best friend came out from the 'Springs for a couple of days and, seeing as how he didn't connect the LAST time, we were going to make it happen if it killed us. The weather was horrible with wind and rain and all the back country turned to snot. We couldn't get in to two areas at all. The first evening we spotted a couple of sows with piglets and we put the 'scope on 'em just for grins when a big black boar came out and tried to hump one of the sows. (That's usually a good sign) We were out of daylight so we came back the next evening. It had rained all day and we had to walk in about a mile to set up on 'em. About 40 minutes before dark the boar came out further up the canyon, so we set out after him.

Thirty minutes later we were about 75 yards from him and just above him. He looked good so Chris blasted him with his .340 Weatherby Mk V right through both eyes. DRT again. The only problem was; it took four of us 3 1/2 hours to pull him out! We had a cart, but we had to ford some gullies full of running water and the hillsides were covered in churned up mud and cow patties. It was kind of like the keystone kops at one point. As it was we didn't get back to the house until 11:30 that night. That one gutted out at 152 lbs. Nice hogs in great condition.
