The California Bowmen Hunters/State Archery Association (CBH/SAA) has selected wildlife biologists Karen R. Fothergill and Kenneth E. Mayer as recipients of its Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Employee of the Year award. Both recipients will be honored at a CBH/SAA banquet on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 in Sacramento.

"This award is presented annually to recognize outstanding service, dedication, and exceptional contributions to further conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitat and partnerships with hunters," said J. Rod McGinnis of the CBHSA.

"Karen and Ken epitomize the kind of professional dedication that comes from a lifelong interest in wildlife conservation," McGinnis said. " What's more, they recognize and support the important role that hunters play in conserving California's wildlife by promoting a spirit of cooperation between hunters and the DFG."

Fothergill, currently the DFG's Game Bird Heritage Program Coordinator, started her career with the DFG's fisheries program in 1989. She worked as a water quality biologist and fisheries biologist before transferring to the upland game program. A certified field training biologist and hunter education instructor, Fothergill has also published numerous hunting-related articles and authored the California Turkey Hunting Guide.

Fothergill's accomplishments include the development of hunting and shooting programs to recruit and retain California hunters, including the DFG special hunts program and a comprehensive advanced hunter education program called "Second Step."

Mayer is Chief of the Scientific Branch of DFG's Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR), the lead state agency charged with spill prevention and cleanup within California's marine environment. Prior to joining OSPR, Mayer served as coordinator of the DFG's statewide deer management program, supervising the DFG's deer data collection and analysis and research activities.

Among his accomplishments, Mayer is a certified wildlife biologist and was instrumental in creating the wildlife habitat relationship program, a database of the state's wildlife and the habitats that support them. He has authored or co-authored more than two dozen publications and books on a variety of wildlife topics. Mayer has also served on the American Archery Council, Professional Wildlife Management Committee for 15 years.

The process of selecting the Employee of the Year began with nominations from the CBH/SAA's six regions. The names of the nominees, along with brief biographies, went to the association's membership for a vote. This year the voting resulted in a tie between Fothergill and Mayer.

The CBH/SAA boasts a membership of more than 3,000 people and represents the interests of an estimated 50,000 bow hunters and archery enthusiasts. This is the fourth year that CBH/SAA has named an honoree from the DFG. The 2002 award recipient was DFG Deputy Director Sonke Mastrup; previous years' recipients were Jack Edwards (2001), Chief of DFG's Conservation Education Branch, and Warden Jack Booth (2000).
