I'm a total greenhorn on this forum but I've really enjoyed reading through all of the old posts. A friend and I are going to be putting in for NM archery elk tags this next fall, and I was wondering if anyone could offer up any experience or knowledge of this unit. We are both 1st time elk hunters, and are hoping to put in for a unit with a good number of elk and half way decent odds. We will be backpack hunting and i'm a little concerned about getting away from the crowds and their 4 wheelers in this unit (Mt. Taylor region of cibola nat. forest)... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kurt

I've heard that the unit does not provide as much opportunity to get away from the crowds as a lot of other units. You'd probably have to work harder to get away from the other tag holders than in some units. There are decent numbers of elk but also a lot of tags from what I've heard....am not sure what average age class of bulls the objective is there but probably a bit younger than some of the other units like in the Gila and such but not as young as many, many CO units. Good luck in the draw! I hope to draw NM again this year too.
