Rannie,

Reading back on your exchange with GreatWhite and at the risk of looking dense and sounding repetitive, do you mean to say that you can process permit and register all at one swoop once a filled up permit application is handed to you?

With permit application and money order on standby in the glove compartment, this will help those of us southerners to sneak in a hunt at FHL after depositing our wives to their folks up in the north.

Thanks and best regards,

bjake21,
Haha... okay, we'll see you later then! :)

beastslayer,
Yes, I am processing permit applications thru the window right now. It doesn't take more than 2 minutes if forms are filled out correctly. But I know during deer season, it's going to get crazy out there with hundreds of people in line so I'm still encouraging people to send it in thru the mail if they have time to wait.

Also, Rochelle & I have worked out our schedules so that there is going to be someone at the office 7 days a week. If any of you would like to drop off your permit application and get your permit sticker, you can do that too. Click on my profile name and you'll see the office hours. =)

JESSE,
THANK YOU for giving your blessing for letting us give updates on FHL.

Hope to see you & Rick soon!

We got back from Hunter-Liggett yesterday afternoon and we were pretty beat. We did a lot of hiking around area 5 mostly and then looped around area 30. On Thursday evening I checked the phone message and the only areas that I knew (from reading here) had any pigs were areas 29 & 30. So I went and bought some slugs and was prepared to do some shotgun hunting.

We got there Friday afternoon and talk to Rannie and Rochelle for a while and looked at some maps and decided on area 5. The biologist had reported seeing pigs in area 5 recently and since we could hunt with rifles instead we opted to check it out. We hiked a lot around northern end along the river and finally found a little bit of sign Saturday evening on the other side of the river heading in a large open canyon that looked really good. We hiked in there and when we got to the beginning there were signs that marked the beginning on area 4, ah! We glassed the large open grass area and saw about 30-40 deer, we saw a lot of does this weekend, 3 spikes and 2 2x2s.

We decided that night, after talking to several other groups of hunters that hunted area 5 for the same reasons as us that we were going to try area 30. We got there a little late, by the time we were out of the truck it was about 6am. We walked the loop down Argyle and up along Jolon creek back around. As we started up the road that parallels Jolon creek we decided that I would hike the ridge above to the East and my partner would walk the trail below by the river and see what we could do. At about the mid-point of this stretch I hear my partner’s shotgun blast! I run to where I can see him and look where he is aiming and see a nice sized pig by itself. I am still headed this way and as I get in range the hog is still there walking around! So I figure he is hit and I don't take the shot waiting for him to fall and then my partner shoots again, missing and the pig dives in the creek/brush below. It turns out my partner walked right by the hog before he noticed the pig and missed both times.

That was it, no other pigs seen. Was a great trip, I can't wait to get back out there. Rannie and Rochelle were very nice and helpful just as expected, I think they were having a little too much fun at times.

larrysogla, bjake21, GreatWhite, dirtpoor, & all the other JHO readers without screen names,

It was so nice meeting all of you this past weekend. I tallied a total of 4 pigs taken all together... 2 out of TA-8 and 2 out of TA-29. I'm hoping this 4th of July weekend will be open for hunt. I'm pretty sure if we are open, there will lots of areas available plus we'll be open Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for hunt.

bjake21- Yeah, Rochelle and I have fun there. Were you the one who said you could hear us laughing all the way in the campgrounds? LOL

it seems like you enjoy yourselves, I also caught you with the JHO forums on your computer screen!
<

dirtpoor - I know what you mean, we did a lot of hiking this weekend also. And after talking with you for a while you guys seem to really know your stuff. Alan wouldn't stop talking about eating Raccoon ribs!

After we missed that hog on Sunday I've been trying to see when I can get out there again. It looks like this coming weekend might work for me afterall... How does it look this weekend Rannie, does it get pretty packed on 4th of July weekend?

bjake21 or GreatWhite,

How's the camping near the registration boot at FHL?

Aside from being serenaded by laughter from Rannie and Rochelle, any other source of entertainment?

Is it really just $10 per night? What's the capacity of the campground? Any restrictions: alcohol, gas stove, snoring, etc.?

larrysogla - will you be back this extended weekend?

The camping arrangment was good for the amount of people that were there. The campsites are good sized, they have fit pits and BBQs, I don't think there are any restrictions on alcohal in the campground, as long as you're done for the day and not going into the TAs. It is $10 per night on the honor system. I am not sure how many campsites there are b/c it seems like there was more furthar back, but it held quite a few. Pretty respectful campers when I was there last weekend. I had a great time all around I will probably be back there this coming weekend as long as it is open.

Aside from the entertainment from check-in window, you're pretty much on your own unless you count watching me kick racoons out of my camp all night entertaining....

Between that and the elk bugles and coyote howls Friday night was a long night....

<

Hey Rannie,

Will you process permit application for me at the window if I come down this weekend? There will be two or maybe three of us wanted to come down.

Thanks,

L2H

bjake21 - thanks for those tips. that thing about racoon is pretty funny. are there a lot of them in the camp?

and those laughter from rannie and rochelle are without the effects of wine yet (of course, no drinking while on duty)?

rannie - is it still $25 on a 3-day weekend?

anyway, enjoy the hunt. i've seen the newscast and the forecast says it will be sizzling hot over the weekend.

Hi beastslayer,

That would be cool if we could drink at work!
<
We were probably laughing because everytime Rochelle would finish giving information to someone thru the window, she would look at me and ask "Was that right?!?" LOL

Yes, you can use a $25 weekend pass for the 3 days.

beastslayer,
I will not be back this July 4rth weekend at FHL. I am going to Las Vegas on the 9th of July & possibly pass by BassProShops & pick up a game carrier. Maybe also shoot a for rent full auto at those indoor ranges. Have fun at FHL. Lots of cottontail early in the morning & at late afternoon. Remember, July is opening season for cottontails.......mmmmmmmm luscious-delicious. God Bless.
