My son and I hope to take part on the Tejon Ranch hunt this may. We will both use 270 win rifles. Is there any new developments in non lead ammo that would work for pigs. I have some Win Supreme but i want to test them against some other brand. Is there a big difference in effectiveness between 150 grain for pigs vs 130 grains?

Thanks;

Sorry to do this to you lefty but this question has been asked many times. You have to put different brands through your specific gun to know what it likes to shoot. Then do it again for lead, then do it again for different grains of bullet. Every one does it different but I want to know where I'm shooting. My 7mm win mag will shoot remington 160 grain lead exactly 3 inches lower than 160 grain remington copper solids at 200 yds. It won't even put winchester bullets on the paper. It's a winchester 70! go figure. Shoot, shoot, shoot.IMHO
Oh yah, the copper on pig question. When you boil it all down seams to me that if you hit something hard (like bone) with copper it will expand the way you want it to. So the tried and true stratagy with lead was:don't hit the shoulder blades on a pig because it could deflect your bullet, is the opposite with copper. Copper is much harder and a pig can handle a pass through shot and keep on truckin....

I've killed a bunch of hogs, my hunting partner's favorite rifle is a .270 and HE'S killed more pigs than me, all with Barnes TSX's. Shoot what is most accurate in your gun and hit 'em where you're supposed to; they'll go down.

I was hoping that some sort of non cooper lead substitute has come out in the market who's cost is close to lead but that does not yet seem to be the case:(. I guess I will have to buy various brands of ammo the barnes thx being one it kind of sucks since we all know the price of cooper ammo:skeered:

Thanks;

K Rad i have to disagree my model 7 .260 shooting 140 grain partitions blew up both shoulders no deflection at all. Given my choice i will drive a 6.5mm 120 grain TSX in the noggin of a pig and watch them drop!
Ohh yeah I hand load these about 3100 FPS out of custom Alpine actioned 6.5 x 47 Lapua.

I found that Winchester E-tips in 130 grain were closest to following the Remington 130 grain lead bullets I sighted in with on my .270. For my rifle,when I tried the copper, and I tried three different brands, just didn't follow where my rifle was pointed. E-tips did.

Hope that helps.

Ive shot every brand through my 300 and didnt group worth a shit tell i found corbon in that gun thats what shoots best. Sucks it cost so damn much to find out my suggestion is talk to friends with the same caliber and split the cost or it will get spendy find the right round for your gun. The etips shot damn neer a 8 inch group at a 100 with my gun and fouled the barrel very bad i wont try them in others.

See what I mean.:confused: I would have never answered this question but you said you were bringing your son so anyone who is teaching kids to hunt is getting help from me. I was trying in my simple way to boil down the (add-infinitum) answers to that question. The thing is, they are all "right". They know what their guns will do because they have spent enough range time and $ to know. There is one guy who's girlfriend is putting down pigs with a 243 w/80 gr. copper. I say whatever works for you is the right answer. I try to take a cross-section of what everyone says. Meaning: the brands that were mentioned the most are probably the one's you want to start with...good luck and I'll see you and your son at Tejon.

I have heard from a lot of folks who love the way the Hornady GMX's shoot out of their guns and love the performance of the bullets.

Thanks guys. My understanding on the Corbon bullets is that they make great self defense rounds but are to destructive on game animalls and ruin a lot of meat. However if that is not true then I will have to consider that round. My only actual experience with copper bullets is when my son whent deer hunting at the FHL Jr hunt and he shot a.270 130 grain e-tip that hit the deer on the spine and it sure did shatter the spine. Hey Mod good job on those pigies did the Corbons ruin a lot of meat?

thank you lefty and No they held together very well actually found the killing round on the biggest and it was 100 percent small mushroom nothing like lead but it held together. Corbon DPX hunter its the barnes triple shock bullet i think the same as federal uses but the corbon shoots much better out of my tika t3. bruised the hell out of my shoulder testing all the rounds but had a blast doing it just wish it wouldnt of cost so much. good luck

I bought a box of Black Hills 130 grain bullets with the Barnes x bullet. They are $8 bucks a box less then the Federal Fusions which also use the same barnes bullet. Has soon has my son recieves his Marlin X-7 and gets his redfield scope mounted I will try the Black Hills vs Winchester E-Tips. if either one doesn't work out I will have to try the Hornady and Corbon. I will just have to see how they work and hope I don't have to buy a lot of different brands.

Lefty,

I shoot a Marlin XL-7 so what I was saying about e-tips may be worth checking out.

ive seen many many animals shot with non lead bullets they seem to all work fine as far as performance the biggest issue i see is people dont want to sight in there guns
evey ammo shoots different YOU MUST SIGHT IN WITH WHAT YOUR GOING TO HUNT WITH .
shoot a lighter bullet .
and to make shure your gun shoots straight you must clean it veary good before you shoot non lead as it is softer copper than the jackets on lead jacketed bullets
basicly the fouling in your barrel will damage the bullet and reduce accuracy
as far as meat damage goes maybe a larger hole but less surrounding damage
the only way to save any money is to load your own and to make shure your scopes are tight on the gun loose mounts and rings will screw you use locktite.
if it take more than 5 rounds to sight in a gun something is probly not right

As has been said, every gun is different and ammo produces different results. I shoot Winchester Etips out of my 300 win mag and they are dead on. IMHO, this non lead thing is going to go nation wide and we all will have to adapt. Quality hand loads are best, followed by quality factory loads...
