When you are going west on 152 you go past the face of the dam and continue on around the right side of the resevour. As you are heading up the grade begin to start looking for a brown sign that will say Upper Cottonwood Creek and its parking. You will not see the parking lot as it is down a small road on the right side of 152.

FYI, Upper Cottonwood is only open to deer hunting during the deer season. As far a pig hunting goes is this: there are not a lot of pigs there but they do migrate through the area. I was there one day when a couple of guys were trying to drag a 300+ boar out of the canyon. Very difficult. If you do get a pig there is will be a lot of work to pack it out, no vehicles allowed. Good luck.

I've taken a couple boars out of Cottonwood. I strongly suggest that you either invest in some kind of game cart to wheel game out or bone out what ever you get. Dragging and even carrying out on a pack is work and a half there. Game always seems to end up at the bottom of the deepest canyon the furthest from the truck.

A few years back, a friend and I went fishing for stripers on the Resevoir at Dinosaur Point. We hiked up the hill on the south side of the boat launch towards those huge power-generating fans. When we got to the top and over the other side of the hill, we spotted a lone black hog on the other side of the ravine. We decided to do a stalk on it to see how close we can get to it. Well, when we got close enough, we noticed that the lone hog we saw was the watch guard for the rest of the herd. Below the lone hog, feeding on the lush green grasses, were a herd of close to 40 pigs. A mixture of piglets, average size, and some huge pigs. After watching them to our satisfaction, we scared them off and continued off towards our fishing. I think this area that I mentioned is open to hunting also. Since then, I've always wanted/meaning to check it out, but it's only open for shotgun and archery. I've just recently bought a Hoyt Powertec and have been doing some practice. JPH, when are you planning to go? If you need a hunting buddy, give me a holler.

My 2 cents about Upper Cotton wood. As public hunter stated, use a cart! and i recomend starting your hike up the hill no later than 3:30. the terrain is pretty steep and will give you a good work out. Bring plenty of water. I was there on the opener. I saw 6 does 2 HUGE boar Waaaaaayyy off in the distance. I also saw public hunter there sitting in the brush. Congrats on the nice buck! My buddy just sent me a blurry picture of a little girl that shot a real nice forky out of there recently. GOOD LUCK! I may try again by the end of the a zone season.
