I was talking to some people about trapping hogs and someone said that they used dog food for bait in their traps.  I was wondering if anybody else had heard of this or have any experience with dog food as bait.

I have heard corn with diesel fuel . I know it sounds odd but I have heard it from different unrelated sources . I have never tried it and dont think I would . It is probally illegal just by epa standards let alone dfg.

I've heard of all kinds of concoctions, including dog food -- canned, dry, both...

I've also heard about corncob and diesel, fish guts, fish heads, fertilizer, orange rinds, and even bacon.

Dog food is okay, but nothing beats  corn or sweet cob (molasses and corn, oats and barley).  It produces a stronger smell (especially when mixed with beer and allowed to ferment for a few days) and is supposedly partially addicting to them.  The mixture continues to ferment in their gut and essentially gets them drunk.  They are much more amiable in the trap and makes handling them a whole lot easier.

The only reason that corn and oil or diesel are mixed is in order to keep the deer and coon out of the traps.

Thanks for the comments.  We have been using corn with diesel on it as our bait and have been catching hogs.  I just thought that the dog food would proably just call in the ants and was wondering what other people thought about it.  Thanks again, Later
