I rode almost 20k miles on the OHV's in Angeles and Los Padres NF on my ATV's. Great adventures...These pictures are at the 138 and I5 near Gorman. You could ride (probably not now) legally all the way to Santa Clarita on OHV trails.

That picture reminds me, there's a guzzler in the canyon directly in front of him that is filled most of the way with mud. I don't know who would organize maintenance on that but it needs it bad. So does the canyon to the East scattered with trash.

The area you describe. My younger bro owns a parcel up against Liebere Gulch. That whole upper half of D11... to a Ranger... is considered close to the public. Supposedly something to do with the "Powerhouse Fire"? I explained and showed her that my bro had a parcel and that I was driving thru that closed road because the other way of getting in there... thru the neighboring properties... that much shorter much nicer road had multiple thick cable locks drawn across by the various neighbors preventing access that way.

It is angering and enraging that they have the balls to be over here telling me that this whole damn huge area of public lands is a no-no. You know DAMN well them and their Ranger buddies more than likely do their hunting out there.

This is a prime example of why I avoid talking to rangers. Nine times out of 10 you get really bad information. So much bogus info given to you right there. The "forest" isn't closed. Certain roads may be closed to motorized use, like the road up to Liebere Mountain is annoying closed because they haven't fixed the wash out damage, but your still allowed to be in and use the "forest". If the gate was open and you were able to drive on it doesn't seem like the road you were on was closed. The area effected by the powerhouse fire was over 20 miles away. It's been long enough that the area effected by the powerhouse fire should be open now anyways.

If possible I try to be in a position where I'm never even told stupid garbage like that. Your allowed to hunt everywhere up there even if your not allowed to drive on all the roads. Don't let some lame forest service person tell you otherwise. If it wasn't posted closed, gate was open, and nothing on the forest service site about a closure then it's open.

And sometimes you have to look at the positive side of a gate being locked. Keeps the road hunters out.

The road did have a freestanding sign set out in the middle of it saying it was closed. But as I said, it was the only way to get over to my lil bro's property. I politely and pleasantly explained that to her while showing her written permission for me to hunt his property. She happened to be driving in up that road as I was driving out in the afternoon.

YEah... that road where you turn up off the main road... that one is for sure closed closed closed. They had your typical steel gate locked and all kinds of signs on it. Like they really wanted to make sure you know you weren't supposed to go up there.

Oh yeah and uh... Deer aren't the only thing up in that area either.

Hmmmmm... don't believe that's true, most of the closed roads have signs that say "No motorized vehicles" unless it is closed to all public use (usually after fires due to safety concerns).

Tech,
A friend of mine had the same dream. We hunted pig at Liggett and he got one. He had a KTM and I had my car. We had to use my car to help ...... but we did talk about what it would take if it was just him on his bike. Here are some thoughts:
Get a gun you can break down. If you are doing Liggett, then a pump action 12ga slug gun would be good. Short rifled barrel. Once you are in the hunting area, you can assemble the gun and put it across your handle bars (using a handle bar rack), or only assemble the gun when you park the bike and walk on foot.
As for the pig, I dont think you want to bring it back whole unless it is in Jan/Feb. I have found that pig meat spoils fast in the heat, and so you want to cool it down as fast as possible. If you break it down and de-bone it while at Liggett, you dont need much space to bring it back. My friends KTM had hard saddle bags that were actually insulated. We just put ice in them and used them as an ice chest. Once he was packed up, you could not tell he was on a hunting trip. Perhaps you can mount a small ice chest on the back seat. Put in some frozen water bottles. You can always stop for ice in King city or Greenfield. (The ice machine at the Liggett cleaning station has been broke for at least 6 months). On a pig, the guts, hide, and head are about 60% of the total weight, so shoot a pig such that the remaining 40% will fit in your ice chest.

Thats just a summary of the the conversation my friend and I had. With experience you will find what works for you and your equipment.

Dennis,
I believe the content of that video is expressly illegal in CA.

Herding with a motorized vehicle.
Animal harassment.
Non legal method of take for big game.

So for those that see that video, I suggest they check their local laws before attempting it themselves.

All that pioneering he's doing...That isht is sketchy as Hell!!!

Only because with the brush/grass, you're not going to see if there is a whole/dip or a decent-sized stone. Also sometimes it can be an area you know well... but then if it rained since last time you've been out there, there can be washouts at unexpected places that can catch you off guard, and jack you Up if you hit 'em at speed! And if you're solo and far away from anything that can be severely no bueno.

Read about Australia's gun control, you will understand why this guy has to ride a motorcycle to hunt.
